Weapon Unlocks

Bit of a Nooby question, and I bet your sick of asnwering stuff like this, but I've only been playing for 3 weeks so take it easy on me.

I'm still only a corporal, with 1800 points and two weapon unlocks, but how often should we get unlocks and whats the pattern?

The reason I ask is that I was lead to believe that you got an unlock when you get promoted, but I've compared against a guy whos only a sergeant and so one rank above me and he has 6 weapons unlocked, yet I would of thought he should only have 3?
Its not like he's miles better than me either because he only has 3300 points, 3 medals, 1 ribbon and 5 badges, and he's been playing since June last year.
Where as I've only been playing less than a month and got 5 medals, 5 ribbons and 16 badges?

He has the SF unlocks that you can only get by playing at least one round in SF, whereas you seem to only have the unlocks for BF2. With only BF2, you'll get 1 unlock with promotions, whereas if you have SF installed and have played a round, you'll get 2 unlocks with every promotion.

Points and rank don't necessarily equal skill, people can pad their stats in pretty easy to conceal ways. When it's done properly, it's nice though to see your hard work paying off with the medals and ribbons, etc.
If you have a question and you feel it might be a really common one, try searching the forums, you can find a lot more useful info by posting in an existing thread as well as add to any info that already exists in said thread.

Thats another thing I want to ask, and your gonna think I'm a proper dumb noob, but whats stats padding?

I have searched the forums like, I just don't fancy going back months and months.

I think my question could be of use to Jaster too, so I hope you don't mind if I ask in your thread Jaster. Have I understood this correctly; when you unlock a weapon in SF can you use that weapon on regular non-SF BF2 servers? That is what I have always thought and that is also the reason why I just bought it from EA.

It wouldn't have been a good investment if you could only use the unlocks in BF2:SF.
