How to smoothly record video

Ok, I have tried a ton of times. I have FRAPS but I can't get a good setting for recording video... I even tried setting everything on low...still laggy.

It's weird, because people with a setup worse than mine are able to record video (I have an athlon 64 3400+, radeon X800Pro, and a gig of ram).

I think it has TV-out or something... but I don't know how to work that.. maybe that would make it so I could just play normal and record it?

I tried FRAPS on default... higher.... lower...

Nothing.. still extremely laggy. Keep in mind... during ALL of this, I have it on half-size, and I'm not recording audio.

I'm sure there is a thread like this somewhere, that we could find with the search option, but since there are two of us..eh.

Same problem here. I have:

2GB of PC3200 400MHz DDR RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 SE (Twin) with 128 MB of DDR-SDRAM (latest catalyst)
AMD Sempron 2700+ at 1.9 Ghz

I know we could do it with BF recorder and battlelauncher but I want to get some fraps too.

I have the same problem and my system is worse so it's not worth mentioning. Recording video isn't an easy task for any computer especially if you're gonna be playing an extremely demanding game like BF2 at the same time. Perhaps there's some sort of hardware mpeg/avi encoder you could buy to enhance the performace?

have you re-encoded the FRAPS outputted video with XviD (or divx) and is that .avi still laggy?? The original video file is very high bitrate and an odd codec and so it can cause playback problems so you should re-encode the video first, it will also make it much smaller filesize, and more compatible with video players.

Use virtualdub http://www.digital-digest.com/software/virtualdub.html and select "video>compression" and select preferable Xvid mpeg4 but you use divx if you prefer. Then select "video>full processing mode" and then "file>save as .avi" and away you go.

If you want to add your own music choose that in audio options. This should make it play perfect.

If you still have no luck (and i don't know why TBH) you could always use the video out straight into a video or DV recorder via svhs or phono's and simply record the secondary output through the approriate AUX channel.

That only helps for playback.. my problem is the crappy performance when recording... and i'm talking, not even playable. I mean... it's not that bad, but for the things I want to do, they are in the jet/heli... and it all has to be running fine... I want to do a planewhore type of video where I just record the whole round.

Have you tried snagit? It's like fraps. Not sure how good it works with games but it might be worth a shot.

The only way to get lag free is use 2 PCs. Play with your main PC and have a cpature card in the second. Run your TV out to the cap card.

It's your harddrive...

Let me guess, you have windows installed on the same drive as your pagefile and the game...
And then, you want to record to that same drive also...

Make sure all these processes read from a seperate HD on a seperate IDE/SATA channel...

It'll be smooth like a baby's skin...

A DV Camcorder (if you have access to one) is another option well-worth considering. Depending on your video card / available adaptors, you can use an S-video lead to output the image to the DVC and you'll be able to record very high-quality footage without any impact on your normal framerate.

(There are a couple of other methods, too, and I'd happily detail them but right now, I'm off to the football!)

When I was recording this little crap video my framerate was low. But when you look it over back in windows it looks fine to me.... I think thats just how fraps works.... you get used to it after a while....

You think it would work if I had an ipod hooked up and recorded to that?


edit: come to think of it.. I have a spare 40gig laying around.. But I'm not sure what I have to do to get windows to regognize it (not too good with hd's... I only know the basic things for seting up computers).

The thing is, my ipod used to work with the computer, but then I installed SP2, and it messed with the ipod drivers, and now it doesn't work... so i've been trying to fix that, but if I add a slave hd, that will work right?
