    3ds max help/modeling help

    My first question is:
How do i bring up the polygon counter? as seen in this picture: count on the right. How dose he get it up?

How do you cut away polygons? In my ak-47 render

I have no grooves in the magazene, as they are in this picture:

My 3rd question is how do i make a wood and metal texture like on the real gun? I tried the wood tutorial here but it didn't suite the gun very well. If there is a forum or place i can go for tutorials on skinning it would be great

My forth and final question is: What technique should i use for modeling? Currently, im using the line tool to draw the outline and extruding it to the size i want. Is there a better way to model? Thanks

to smoth stuff out you can select something go to the modifiers thing and select either..turbo smooth, mesh smooth, an di think thats it for smoothing...but you may need to do more then that i dont know..im still new to 3ds max too

      ^^^^^^ no no no

to smooth a section for game modelling select your editable mesh/poly - select "select by poly" - then go down your menu until you find the "smoothing groups" section - it will be a panel with lots of number buttons - select the faces you want smooth, then click one number - go to the next set select click on another number and so on.

to get your poly counter go to the last button on the right of the right hand menu thingy and at the top you will see a button saying "more" click it and select polygon counter.

      problem solved.

to do your cut away either add more verts and do it manually - the good way.

or make the cylinders and boolean them out of the clip - the bad way.

      good luck

I tried that but, the vertices are connected to each otherand when i move it down it makes a huge indent

to do grooves like that you use the extrude polygon function and make it intrude instead of extrude..

maky sure your object is converted to a poly.

select polygon use the inset and extrude features to create them inner grooves. if need be go to vertex mode and manually move them.

use bevel to help you get the correct shape if need be.

as someone said above use the smoothing groups to get a nice finish..

the easiest way is to play with these options and keep trying different things to get the best results, which all depends on how you want it to look.

              good luck

When i use the smooth groups, it smooths all the triangles and looks yuck

you have to select the section of polies you want smoothed first?

Which polies do i have to select? The side ones or top ones?

                        Re: 3ds max help/modeling help

ok - here's how it is - when you make a cylinder all the side faces are automatically smoothed - try this, make a cylinder - then select all the side faces (in select poly) and then click OFF the smoothing group button which is depressed - you will now see ugly cylinder.

now select two adjoining faces and click on the smooth group - notice how the edge "dissappears".

now, in all future modelling, if you are making (for example) the buttstock of the AK - you would select all the side faces and make one smoothing group - then you would get all the top/back/bottom facing sides and make another smoothing group... any of this make sense?

                        - to make smoothed area = select faces you want smoothed and then click one of the smoothing buttons... simple :)

I understand. I have 1 problem though. After i finished adding a smooth group to a polygon, i deselect, select my new polygons and put on a smooth group, my previous smooth group polygons go away

select a different number for each group..
