i've been making a search and so far i've found 3 cable conn options :
300kb up / 2mb down - with a 20gb limit (R$ 99,90, which is a decent price)
600/4mb - 40gb limit (119,90, payable )
600/8mb - 80gb limit (219,00, too expensive for me)

and 2 ADSL conn :
128kb up/1mb down - with 20gb limit (R$ 109,00)
600kb/8mb - 60gb limit (R$ 209,00, out of question)

I'm thinking about getting the second cable option. I want to know if the up/down speed is enough to play bf2 smoothly ....

Well, I have Comcast now, used to have Bellshouth DSL. Having used both I would never go with DSL again. But this may just be a matter of providers. So really all I can say is if you have a choice between Comcast and Bellsouth, use Comcast, lol.

doesn't comcast sponser some BF2 servers,

As far as I know there is no limit on what you can download if you live in America. I have no clue what company your going through but my company has no limits.

256kbps down and 64kbps up, I thought would have been ok for me but after reading this its obvisly not.
How whould it go anyway? I live on the eastern coast of Australia (if that has anything to do with it).

Ok, first of all, cable is also a copper wire. I'm not sure what you think its made out of by try cutting a coax cable open sometime.

Also, its not necessarily "converted to fiber" at the closest node, you're making assumptions about your providers network. It could easily be a copper T3, backhauled to a larger pop (typically referred to as a "MegaPOP"), and then hop on an ATM/Frame network, which would probably be fiber. I'm guessing here, but its based on the actual engineering of most provider networks.

DSL is just as likely, if not MORE likely to ride fiber from the DSLAM (DSL Access multiplier, the device your DSL circuit terminates in) into the provider network than cable. Every telco backbone on the planet is fiber, and they have to provision the core for a lot more traffic than cable providers typically do (one PRI = 24 B channels = 24 phone calls, do the math, one DS3 = 28 T1's).



And I used to have a cable modem from medicom that was up about 3 days out of the week.

Personally - I have cable. $100/month (paid for by my employer) gets me 768kb/9mb, a static IP and no ports blocked inbound.

To determine which is faster, you have to break down "faster" which is a combination of to factors - bandwidth and latency. Think of a highway - bandwidth would be the number of lanes, and latency would be the speed limit. Thats great that you've got 10mb of bandwidth, but if you have 300ms of latency, you'll never see 10mb of actual traffic.

The single most limiting factor for most broadband customers, during most data transfers is LATENCY not BANDWIDTH.

I'll say it again - LATENCY NOT BANDWIDTH.

So, the question is which has better latency. And the answer is - *drumroll* - neither. It depends on the path that the data must take to get from source to destination, which is based on your provider's peering arrangements, and the service providers the data must traverse to reach the destination. You may try to download something from your neighbor next door, and it might have to make it through 3 different teir 1 carriers to get there.

I could keep going for another 10 pages but I think you get the point.

EDIT: And in case you didn't get the point, I'll spell it out: neither is better, latency is a toss up, no guarantees, so just go with the provider that will give you the most bandwidth for the least amount of money.

I use to work for Adelphia, and they had a crappy connection. I mean sometimes depending on which server I picked to dl from I'd get my rated speed, but most of the times I got about 100kb. I'm not exactly sure why but my pings on servers was high. A friend of mine lived in Insights district which is a few miles from me. Adelphia supposly a much bigger company should of been better, but Insights pings, and dl speeds WERE insanely faster. Once I got it I've noticed a huge improvement. Pings around 20-30ms. Download speeds at stable speeds around 500-800kb on every file planet or gamershell server I download off of. Places where I use to get 15kb wth adelphia give me a stable 400kb a second.

So I guess its just because adelphia's arrangements are setup differently, or they are further away? I'm not sure why insight is so much better. A company like adelphia who just got bought out by comcast sucking so bad, that a small company that only runs a few states of terroritory is better.

what you talking about wilis. i got comcast and it only costs $50 / month.

Shared bandwidth, maximum (in Sydney) is about 8Mbps, now this is shared, if you are the only one on the network you get great speeds, but you never get the full speed here. It is very fast, i use it and i never have any ping over 40..

ADSL/SDSL:

Dedicated speed, you stay at this speed, no faster, no slower. The speeds usually arent as fast, but you know that you have your speed and its yours. With ADSL the upload is usualy good, but the download is usually bad (why SDSL is good, same upload and download speed).

Best option is ADSL2, 24Mbps upload 10Mbps download. Or get near a GigaPort.. 100GBps.. or so.. (3 DVD's can get downloaded every seccond!) :shock: :p

I would say cable.. ive never had any problems with it.

And yes that speed, the 2nd one, is very playable. You should get some very nice pings on it.

used to have SBC DSL . it was a POS. now i have Comcast and i love it was downloading an episode of dl.tv yesterday and was dling it at 1050KB/s with DSl i got like 200 max . my ping in my fav bf2 server (Winnipeg) in canada i believe i get a ping of 9 ussually. my friend has dsl and gets a ping of 120-170 at the same server and we live in the same place.

in short Cable > DSL

i workin in telephony industry and dsl is Dedicated speed nothing, notice the name ends in phony... its a scam. marketing noise. the fact is that yes from your home to your local pop the line is yours, but at the pop its all shared.
