one word: Awesome
sure it's unrealistic (I mean come on even the F-5E Tiger II can carry 48 Missiles and 8 Bombs, and you have no chance at blacking or redding out) but still the story, the plot, and the challenges without having realism are just possible WITHOUT having realism, with the realism it would be impossible
here's my review:
Graphics: the Textures on the Aircraft you fly and fight with and against are amazing as well as the textures for all the weapons, the small action movies at the end of "The Invincible Fleet" the beginning of "Stonehenge" and the beginning and end of "Megalith" are awesome and the Breifing Room and Hangar Bay screens are very well detailed.
RATING: 9/10 the best detailing I have ever seen outside of SOCOM II: US Navy SEALs
Sound: The music is very well picked to match the situation of each mission and brings out emotions out of hiding and into the game VERY well, otherwise the Jet engine sounds and the sound of you breaking the sound barrier after 750 MPH on the speedometer is VERY realistic the sounds of every missile launch, and then there is the gunfire and Radio chatter, VERY VERY VERY realistic sounding.
RATING 10/10 the emotion and mood they picked for each missions music jukebox ensured this got a 10, I have never seen music that fit so well with the game
GAMEPLAY: every mission has a well thought out plot and a very good strategic purpose and is nearly obvious to anyone who flys the missions that it is an important event and/or thing that needs to happen for your country (ISAF: the Independent States Allied Forces) to win however, as obvious as the plot of the fighting may be you are not going to get it off that easy while flying the mission I will clue you
RATING: 9/10 there are about 4 missions that were a chore to fly such as "Tango Line" "Bunker Shot" "Safe Return" and "Emancipation" where it was so dark or foggy you couldn't tell where the ground was if it smacked you in the face...literally "Tango Line" was played in a jungle with a VTOL base and a bunch of natural landmarks making it nearly impossible to fonish the mission and NOT fly smack into a cliff.
REPLAYABILITY: with all the planes there are to choose from as well as the different difficulty levels and the quest to get all the different planes at once including special paint schemes and the different weapons to choose from create a level of gameplay that can stay fun for weeks straight, every mission keeps you getting hungry for more
RATING: 10/10 NEVER and I mean NEVER have I finished a game and had as much an urge to replay it as with Ace Combat 04 very awesome with all the different types of planes at your disposal
OVERALL: 11/10 the best aerial arcade game I have ever played, and possibly the best PS2 game I have ever played as well (on par with SOCOM II: US Navy SEALs) every second of game play will keep you coming back for more, the graphics were gorgeous and the Sound effects and Music almost made me cry at the end when it very well matched your characters (Moebius One) willingness to sacrifice himself for the cause of freedom, during the missions you will constan radio chatter from your friends on the ground that your flying above them and that they'll win for sure, during the 12th mission against the enemy superweapon "Stonehenge" you became an ISAF national hero and stay that way until the 18th mission where you fight your enemies (the Erusians) second superweapon (Megalith) where you fight, with instead of wingmen like Rapier and Viper squadrons in the other 17 missions (minus "Breaking Arrows" "Safe Return" and "Escort") you have your very own Moebius squadron formed from the remnants of Viper a Rapier squadrons.
Rent or Buy?: this game is a MUST BUY if you like Aerial Combat games
