    Graphics problem

on newer games such as bf2, wow and cod2, after around 5-10 minutes of play, large polygons begin to flicker rapidly on the screen. i believe this to be the lightmap somehow revealing itself, as it generally comes from the direction of lightsources i.e. the sun on bf2.

shown above is an example. after a while, these black tears begin to build up and more or less fill the screen, causing migraines, seizures etc.

i have tried changing graphics and nforce drivers as well as experimenting with d3d options and vsync, but the problem still persists.

    specs:
    winxp pro sp2
    amd64 3500+
    x800 xt (tried drivers 6-6.4)
    1gb corsair xms
    winfast nforce4 mobo (tried drivers 6.53 & 6.70)

the problem does not occur in cs:s however. i believe the problem to be related with a certain directx shader used for lighting, but dont know how to fix it.

any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated, ty.

    Re: Graphics problem

Personally, this is either A. Artifacting or B. a driver problem with the game.

others have said it is dynamic lighting.
This is what I would do:
Play for about 5-6 minutes until they begin showing up, and record the temperature of the graphics card. and post it here.

after that, download the newest (and if you alreaduy have the newest, the previous) ATi drivers and try those. if those fail, try downloading some from a while back and it should be fine.

Definitely a heat issue. Lower some of your settings from high to medium. Check on tweakguides for their recommendations on BF2 settings. They seem to be pretty spot on. I used to get the same tearing when playing at 1600X1200 with all settings on high after 30 minutes or so. Taking all of the settings to medium, except for textures, made that go away.

I get that when I O/C my card, definately a heat issue as it affects performance.

I got the same thing with OC'ng too. I didn't really need to OC, but wanted to try it out. Next time I'm going to try my hand at building a liquid-cooled rig instead of an air-cooled one.

in my view if your cooler cant handle the card at full settings then send it back.

They test these things to the limits so you can expect it to play all on high for long periouds of time

Don't listen to this guy! he is a lunatic. Opening your sidepanel is dangerous, you will get 10 times the dust in your computer, makeing "dustbacks" with can guide electricity, causing short circuit.

Sorry for my english, i'm only a dutch computerfreak.

Did i say leave the bloody side panel of ? I said to see if the games run, if so theres the problem OVERHEATING. Then what he does is get a fan to keep it cool. But hopefully he does it fast anouf in case tones of dust suddenly fills up his pc which may result in death.
Thanks for the handy tip on dust.

lol I dont need to O/C either. I just wanted to up my 1900xt to xtx speeds...but damn that card gets hot even at stock speeds.

I just leave it a stock until I can find a better way to cool it. I have an Arctic Cooler X2 for now, but that POS blows the hot air all over my mobo, and now I cant get it off because of the sticky memory pads lol. At least its quiet at 100% speed and keeps load temps to <80c . Problem is I now have to find a way to cool down my mobo

ur a nutter cos u dont have a clue what ur talking about.

By taking off the aide panel the GFX card can get muhc more coller air into it. If u dont see any artifacts like u have been doing its a simple case that ur GFX card is getting too hot. maybe try a 3rd party cooler?

PS whats ur case like, also have u got any fans in there?

i had a look inside my pc case and got rid of the dust, as there was a nasty buildup - which knocked 15 degrees off the temperature.

had a look at the graphics card cooler, turns out the fan is knackered. should of done this earlier.

i'll be buying a new cooler.

                          thanks for the replies!

for future note, if u have any fans inside ur case pulling air in a mesh will be required as this stops any dust from entering the system , but ull av to keep & eye on it & clean it if it gets clogged up.

I just went through that exercise last week. I'd had my box for about 10 months and it was shocking how much crap had built up on the fans, filters and inside.
