What it takes to become a good shooter?

I have read some threads on this forum and others, about getting points, advancing ranks and achieving badges, awards and medals. My thoughts are then co-related to aiming.

I am now Staff Sergeant, just promoted as a matter of fact. However, I am a bit ashamed of this rank, because I do not at all, consider myself a good shooter. My aiming is absolutely terrible. I wouldn't hsow you my stat for national security reasons. If you check those figures I am sure you will agree with me quite so. When I say my aiming is terrible, I am comparing this capability to other adversaries I met in the last 100 hours of my BF2/SF career. They can go prone and took my life with just 1 shot. Some are really brilliant, we met in close quater almost like kissing each other distance, then he was dancing around me and not long before that I was dead.

What I am trying to say, I can get many ribbons, badges and awards through other methods, but wouldn't be nicer to get them the proper way. I appreciate and generally respect those who participated in fights using knives and pistold. Surely they are the genuine soldier mentality who use true ability to achieve awards.

How do I train myself to be a true good shooter?

Practice man practice, I have honestly "tried" to get a few of my badges, like i just recieved my Vet Assault Badge, and personnaly I hate that class, I refuse to use the GL and the only kills i could get ground pounding were sneaking up behind someone, or lucky shots, but if it were face to face, id lose everytime.. so i helped myself about 12 of my 20 kills needed came from tank/jets but i refuse to whore the whole round to get that badge.. I am currently working on my Vet Engineer badge, and i thought it would be worse then the assualt class, but to my suprise 2/3 shots at mid range with that shotgun "no unlocks" i can get a kill.. Ive also posted a thread about "AIMING" and i had a few responses and some decient input, but honestly, someone can not tell you how to aim... just gonna take practice !!!

First you must buy a mouse. Using the keyboard to aim takes time, but the true masterer of games must first progress from keyboard to mouse. I did my first 10,000 points with the arrow keys and the ASDW keys.

If it doesnt come to you naturally, I think you should watch some gameplay footage and watch how people aim in different situations eg. leading the shot, bullet drop, aiming for different parts of the body for different situations. Where to get gameplay footage? I dont know but you have got to start somewhere, maybe watching a friend who has experience.. I always thought aiming was a natural thing and people just get better over time as they get used to the weapon in use but I guess it isnt like that always.

          1) by a good mouse ... Logitech G5 is good choice ... then ... all sensitivities in controls move to CC = 0.2, LV = 1, A = 2, H = 2, B = 2, yaw and pitch = 1

          2) when aim use mouse and A-D keys

          3) Practice in singleplayer with sniper then with anti tank then with specops and then with medic/assault

          4) test new skils online :)

Thanks for the input, truely useful. I am really dumb you know. I used to think that bullet travels in straight line without a trajectory until just recently when I was using the rockets on the Insurgent side. Shooting at a moving vehicle like an APC is wrong when you shoot without a predicted intersection. Same for some guns to my surprise. The vectorsare tricky.

Engineer! O, that would be the biggest challenge for the future. I mean, boring as it is this class, you still need to achieve in order to advance to higher ranking in the future. I find using mines in BF2 is useless in most of the maps. In SF, mines is easier.

And thanks for the mouse settings, I will try that out.

Re: What it takes to become a good shooter?

If you were asking on advice on shooting in unreal tournament, quake or rtcw (et), I would offer some advice on improving your reflexes and mouse tracking skills.

But in bf2, having a "good gun" is based more on your ability to master the spread & recoil system than it is pure reflexes.

Games like quake and rtcw are "point, click and kill" games.
As in, your ability to shoot is based almost solely on your ability to track and snap with precision.

In bf2, I'm sure you have noticed by now, that even if you have a guy dead center in your crosshair from only 5 feet away... if you don't have control over your bursts, every single bullet is going to miss.

My best advice would be this: find a kit you like, find a gun you do decent with (be it an unlock or base weapon) and stick with it until you know it inside and out.

Remember, a lot of these weapons are vastly different in how they perform as far as accuracy goes; it’s going to be hard to master anything if you constantly are changing from gun to gun.

Once you really invest some time with a particular gun, you will find yourself "knowing" just where the spread is going to offset and placing your shots where they should go will become habit.

              Take the g3 for example.
Most will dismiss it as a p.o.s with high damage but poor accuracy upon initial glance, yet those who have stuck with it for a serious length of time are pure killing machines.

Re: What it takes to become a good shooter?

Every FPS I have I am great at within a week of a games release I am pretty good. Of course I only play FPS's like BF2/Joint Operations/Swat 4

Now the 2 things that can give the skillz that killz and WONT cost you money are.

1: Common sense, think about it have you ever seen a guy running away then chase him? Your running after him, he turns the corner you follow and boom you get knifed in the face? It's all about knowing when to Run/hide & Fight.

2: A clan. If you play in a squad/group you know people got your back. When people got my back it makes me less tense and less trigger happy So I take my time with shots.

In most FPS Games - Aim for the head, period.

And something everyone falls into is 'zombie aiming', where you are just going through the motions, and you'll catch yourself pointing the gun to the persons chest. Its normal for someone to aim there, but in a game living vs. dying is decided over dealing out more damage - therefore aim for the guys face.

Be very mindful of your aim, watch the crosshair, and practice, practice, pracitce.

Re: What it takes to become a good shooter?

Go play a twitch shooter game for a few weeks. Honestly, you can pick up the original Unreal Tournament (UT99) for less than 10 bucks and there are still close to 1000 servers running it.

Find any CTF server that says InstaGib on it and play on them a few times a week. InstaGib means one shot kills btw, in case you didn't know, not being sarcastic either. You'll be dealing with alot of bunny hopping and ****, but there is not really any better way to get used to leading your shot fast and respawning to get right back into the thick of things in half a second every time than a UT instagib server (hell UT2003 and UT2004 instagibs will do also). You'll die alot and maybe get frustrated, but the more you do it, the more you are just training your reflexes, just like anything else in real life.

Otherwise, pick a weapon kit that is to your personal playing style. Believe it or not, the shotgun unlocks (DAO and JackHammer) are real ass kickers in close quarters and even near medium ranges, and you don't have to be that accurate with them because of the massive shot spread. Once you get a hang of using them, move on to something with a bit more accuracy.

Like the other guy above said, he had been playing other FPS games for a while, so it doesn't take him long to adjust to leading his shots when going from one game to another. And alot of other people that have played alot of FPS games in the past probably have had (or are having) the same experience as him. I'm no different in that manner either, I had been playing online FPS games since Aliens vs Predator, UT99, Tactical Ops, BF42, DC, BFV and now this. Just comes from experience, play often and mind your lead, after a while, it comes natural.

I have already got some sort of practice in SWAT 4. But still I am slow in aiming. I always lose to them when they dodge by moving in circle, it is the most diffciult manuever to over come.

Lol! I play with godlike bots, elimination (last man standing) on UT2k4. It's nuts. Nothing better for training those shooting skills though.
