What is it about games that you rank up in or level up in???

I have noticed in my past years of playing video games, I was always drawn to the complex games that you are able to rank up in or level up. I just love the idea of you completng certain requirements and in return you gain a level or a rank. LoL. its just satisfying when you do get that next rank or level. So my question is why are we "addicted" to games like this? Games such as bf2, Oblivion, CSS, WoW, etc. Thx

the sense of accomplishment. makes us feel good. gives ya something to look forward to. adds variety.

It plays on simple psychology to keep you playing more and for longer.
