all of a sudden ping keeps spiking??

I have tried everything other than a rebuild of the OS.

    AMD64 3000+
    1 GB Ram
    256 MB ATI 9600XT-VIO
    SATA 150 7200 RPM
    XP Pro

Game has worked great since I bought it and this past weekend it started to get spikes and connection problems.

I tried all of the usual tricks and software tweaks.
I ran Spy-bot, Ad-Aware, and spysweeper to clean up any spyware.
    Ran CC cleaner
    Ran tuneXP
    TCP optimizer
    Stopped all unnecessary background apps.

I can not run BF2 as a high priority app cause it will halt every 5 secs

Everything was working fine and then all of a sudden it just started acting up. I also noticed my Vent was not working properly also. It would not give any sound and then about 3-4 minutes later it's like it flushed all the convo's in one big giant rambling. Like in Bruce almighty when he heard all the prayers coming at once

    Could be your ISP.
try running a tracert between your system and a few game server IP's

I re-loaded XP hoping to resolve any issues that may have been causing it but still have the same issues.

A tracert shows the problem once i get to this area
      8 309 ms 101 ms 233 ms ae-24-56.car4.Dallas1.Level3.net [4.68.122.176]
      9 60 ms 60 ms 61 ms 4.78.224.14
      10 61 ms 61 ms 61 ms vl32.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com [70.85.127.62]
      11 61 ms 62 ms 61 ms po32.dsr02.dllstx5.theplanet.com [70.85.127.110]
      12 61 ms 61 ms 61 ms po2.car04.dllstx5.theplanet.com [70.84.160.166]
      13 60 ms 61 ms 61 ms bfd45-1-70-86-91-26.dal.trinity-gaming.net [70.86.91.26]

not sure how i can correct #8 but it seems to be kind of consistent past that point

      and here's another different spot

      12 192 ms 264 ms 254 ms po2.car04.dllstx5.theplanet.com [70.84.160.166]

also it will be in various spots after the #8 hit

It is possible that it is your provider--either a problem with their network or a change that they made to configuration. You might want to do a search on your provider on message boards etc. to see if there have been other complaints. If all of their customers are having this problem you can be sure that the word is out. I can't comment on your pings because I have never run a traceroute on a server to see what the returns looked like.

Another thing to explore is your sound options. Following the last two patches, a number of people have had connection issues that were ultimately traced to VOIP and/or EAX conficts. Play with your audio settings (ie turning either VOIP or EAX off) and see if it makes any difference to your experience.

Are you at home or at school while playing? If at school, you're sharing a line with thousands of other students. If at home, make sure no one (including yourself) is like downloading warez and files and whatnot while you're playing. The tracert however does show a problem. try looking for another DNS or something to avoid that dallas level3.net hop.

Re: all of a sudden ping keeps spiking??

I'm having ping spikes as well and i'm not sure if my troubleshooting had had any effect
Generally my ping will spike ingame from 50 to 500~700 and waiting a few minutes seems to fix it although I usually get kicked long before that
It happens now in CSS as well so I can assume it applies to all games equally
The problem only arose after patch 1.22 was applied

              Troubleshooting completed
              - manually updating punkbuster and typing pb_sleep 500 into the console
              - turning off zero wireless config in services.msc
              - turning off QoS packet scheduler in LAN settings
              - turning off wireless
              - turning off all web using apps (AVG software, Xfire etc.)
              - turning off EAX in BF2 sound options

              I'm out of options

I have comcast cable internet service and for a couple weeks I had really crappy connections no matter where I tried to connect, packet loss everywhere. They finally fixed it. But it was my ISP that went on the fritz not anything to do with the patch or my system.

Use ping plotter. Contact your ISP, although they may not help you because they don't care about gamers.

I have comcast too, and I have been getting lag spikes every 2 minutes since I came back from spring break. Any chance you live in the Sacramento, CA area? because mine's still not fixed...
edit: hehe nvm... I see you're from Illinois now :)

And what's this tracert you guys are talking about?
                  edit: I (heart) google :)
what does it mean when one of the ms things shows up as an asterisk (*)?

Sorry i left out some details

I'm at home with a 3mb/768 DSL line.

I'm going to try some of the suggestions with the sound. the one thing that i noticed with Vent. was i would have no sound and then all of a sudden it would all come streaming through like a garbled mess.

it still sounds like a networking issue to me, but I've been wrong before :)
