Network questions

I was thinking about setting up a network between mine and my brothers computers but i have a few questions. 1) Can somone show me how i would go about doing this? 2) If one computer has lots of spyware (my brothers has alot) will it in anyway affect other pc's in the network? 3) What features will i get when creating a network? thanks in advance

dont mean to take up yopur questionns but I have a question of my own. well I have wireless connection to my bros router and when we play at the same time ( we lag at the same time) but when I play and he isnt I have hardly any lag. well my question is if I went back to a router would it make less lag?

1) its really easy just hook both pc's up to the router using CAT5 cable's.

2) Yes your computer can get ur borthers spyware so make sure you get rid of all that :)
3) when you have a network you can share music, word documents etc. And if you have a printer and ur brother doesnt your brother can print through your printer

we have them all hooked up into a cable modem. will this work or will i have to get a router?

The reason is probably some sort of trojan or spyware application on your brothers computer that is consuming bandwidth. Check the lights on the router when both computers are idle and all programs are closed out for suspicious activity. I don't know much about Wi-Fi but it may also be that it is not capable of running a bandwidth intensive game like BF2 for two seperate computers. I would recommend running Ethereal to sniff the packets on your LAN and see what is happening but as I said to someone else it can be a difficult program to master.

I would not recommend connecting to any compromised PCs EVER. Alot of malware applications continually monitor for vulnerable victims on a LAN. Tell your brother to clean up his garbage and reformat before your PCs mate. You wouldn't wanna catch AIDS from a filthy hooker, would you?

I am pretty sure you need to hook them both up to the router and then connect the router to the modem. But you might want to double check that :)

Do you mean;
modem-->pc1-->pc2 (assume not)
or
modem-->pc1&pc2 (my guess)
or
modem1-->pc1
modem2-->pc2 (but why have two modems)

---> = cable or wireless connection

If its option 2 your modem is most likely a router/modem combined anyway, google its model number and it should tell you its specs, if it is a combined thing all you need do is enter that fun world of configuring a windows network, which leads to the fun world of a mental institution.

Well my brothers computer is fairly new and he hasnt downloaded anything suspicious and also has norton running all the time so Im highly douting that his computer has a trojan or virus. My best guess would be the wireless aspect.

Your slow speed would have to be spyware related. Download some anti-spyware programs like AdAware etc ...

It's better to use a ethernet connection rather than a wireless connection. BF2 doesn't seem to like wireless.

My home network is setup like this, if you have a router/modem combined into one the router and modem in this diagram is stuck together.


I can have all three computers on BF2 online simultaneously and experience no lag at all.

You only need one router.

Wireless connections are perfectly fine.

The reason you are getting leg is because your internet speed is halved when your brother is online as well.

when your brother comes off line you get the full line speed again, when he goes online he gets half the line speed and your get half the line speed.
