In order for a server to be successful you obviously need to keep it full. What do you think are the most important factors in making a server popular as an admin? As a gamer, what makes you decide to go to whatever your current favorite server is? Please talk amongst yourselves::blabla:

Re: What keeps a server full?
Balanced teams, is a major one, if one team is better then the other then people start to leave.
Another, issue is air superiority, if there is a better pilot on one team that keeps the other team from advancing then people will leave.
Cheaters and nuisances can cause people to leave. Such as people purposely getting Team Killed.Comment

Re: What keeps a server full?
I look for servers that play mostly city maps. There are a couple good ones that are not city maps, but usually if its not a city map, it blows. I also like to play on servers that allow base raping and other activities that most frown upon, simply because its fun to go to an air field and hide as AT and shoot the jets down before they can even take off. Having VOIP enabled is also a good thing, if I join a server and find out that voice is off I usually leave pretty quick. No language filter is very good. I hate going to a server and being kicked for cussing out some retard. If you can't handle swear words you need to grow up. Thats just what I can think of off the top of my head, but yeah if it has those 4 things and I have a good ping for it, I'm happy. I can live without the baseraping but the other 3 things should be standard on a good server.Comment

Re: What keeps a server full?
The most important aspect: Know your player base.
If you've got some regulars, know what it is that they want or what you want to see in the server.
If you want to cator to the smack-tard/l33t crowd, impose no rules, turn off the laungage filter and only admin for obvious griefer behaviour.
Upside: you don't have to do much work.
Downside: that there aren't that as many l33ts are there are noobs and casual players. The server's attitude is likely to be mostly fairly hostial.
If you want to cator to the noobs/casual player base, you might want to think about imposing rules that counter the most whinged about issues in game play (spawn camping, TKing for vehicles, vehcile whorage, etc). Make sure those rules do not violate the RoE, tho. Apply the language filter and make sure to modify the list to include and missing racial slurs 'n stuff. Admin with an iron fist, but be polite and proffessional about it.
Upside: There's more noobs and casual players than any other type of gamer. The attitude of the server is likely to be more friendly.
Downside: It takes more work to admin. Smacktards will call it a noob server.
Choose your path and stick to it. If you spread the word, get some friends (and/or clanmates) involved and provide a constant standard, the player base will grow on it's own.
Hope that helps some.Comment
