Performance woes

A month ago I had a p4 2.4, with 1 gig of ram and a Radeon 9600. It ran competely smooth on all medium settings and I was pretty happy.

I upgraded my computer to a p4 3.2, with 1 gig of ram and a Geforce 6600le. I thought I would be able to run everything on high settings, oh boy was I wrong. So I turned everything back to medium settings and it seems run poorer than it did with my previous specs. It seems to skip a lot.

Could it be that Battlefield 2 does not support Nvidia cards well?

Try a few different drivers, you should be getting fairly good FPS on medium with that card.

Could you prescribe a few drivers I could try please? The only ones I know are the ones on the Nvidia site.

When i used a 6600 i used the drivers from their archive, they were about 71.XX or along those lines. But they were fine, the ones which came with the card were absolute bonk at best.

Somewhere in the little instruction booklet says that BF2 runs great on Nvidia or something like that. (Yes, I did take time to look through that booklet)

well im surprised you upgraded to that card since its only a little better than your previous card. you should be able to play medium fine with that rig

with those specs, medium with maybe a couple on high, or medium with 2xaa is about right. shoulda done research before hand, even with 2GB of ram the 6600 probably wont be able to go high settings.

The real problem you are describing is "stuttering". All high settings requires 2GB of ram regardless of what vid card or proc you have. I have 1.5GB of ram, XFX 6600GT. All of my settings are high except for shadows(bummer, the one thing that nvidia cards are supposed to excel at) and BF2 still needs more memory. I also have my swap file disabled which pretty much puts a wooden stake in the heart of stuttering so long as you have enough ram to run windows without it. I'm afraid there ain't much you can do at the moment except lower your settings. Get 2GB of ram or more. If BF2 is any indication, the next generation of PC games are gonna require a crapload of RAM.

I can run all high settings with my XFX 6600GT 256MB card. Only reason I have shadows set to medium is because the fps drop, although tolerable, is not worth having the high quality shadows present. I see no real difference between med and high shadows. They ought to just type "-30fps drop" in place of high in the dropdown box.

The 6600le is crap. I had the 6600GT before and I could only get medium settings at the most. Also i found that my 6600gt did not run well on the newest drivers (the ones released for the 7800 series. Experiment with the drivers to see what gives the best fps & smooth gameplay.
