what's i read that someone posted on the forums?

You can overclock until the CPU or GPU hits an invisible wall. No matter, what kind of cooling you have, no matter what you do, you can't get past that invisible wall.

    Found it:

Eventually a chip will hit a wall, even if the temps are within acceptable levels there is a magic wall out there where no amount of cooling or voltage can help you overcome.

that wall must be high because the record for clockspeed on a processor is well over 8ghz and that was with an intel 3.8ghz

You just can't say that all dual core AMD cpus out perform all intel dual cpus. I think it is best to compare each model. Prices are not an issue anymore intel CPU prices have droped to AMD prices or close to. Intel is not stupid they know AMD is kicking there but. But thats a good thing to all of us.

ah, but if I got an 3800+ to 7ghz? AMD clockspeeds will prolly never be as high as Intels, just because they don't need to. This all goes back to the more work per cycles, etc.

The good thing Intel has going for them is they are tough processors, they can take a lot of damage and still run, I know my Intel 3GHz P4 HT can run up to 120 degrees Celsius before my computer shuts down, but give it a few hours to cool down and it will still run ok next time you turn it on.
The thing is, Intel P4 proceesors have a very high idle temp (around the 50s in Celcius), so they can take a lot of heat on load, but AMD runs at like the 20s to 30s in temps, so they can only go up to like 60-70C.

Sure its high, when your using nitrongen cooling, and other exotic stuff. Still 8ghz on a 3.8ghz is only a little more than a 100% OC. With supreme ly exotic cooling one would hope they would be able to doube their clockspeed.

On the other hand, most people run with air cooling, and a minority with mildly exotic water cooling, and they will hit a wall pretty fast. For the average AMD64 on air or water, hitting much over 3-3.2ghz right now seems to the the extent of those chips, regardless of voltage or temperatures.

Where'd you hear 8 GHz? The highest cpu-z verified clock is 7.5 GHz. The best thing about Intel is that their stuff runs at high and low temperatures.

Intel CPU's (P4 specifically) will run up to 120 degrees Celsius before your computer automatically shuts down, however at 120 Degrees its extremely sluggish.

Not really I have seen mine go as high as 175F (my sensors may be wrong though) and I did not notice anything wrong. I was playing garys mod with the onslaught add-on for HL2, with my friend at a lan party last weekend. We have the same setup only he has 1 GB of ram and a 3200+ his frames where alot lower than mine and was quite sluggish. We could not figure out what could have been wrong other than I have 1GB more than him.

Jesus! 175*C!!!! Most CPU's I have run, and everything I have read has put safe temperature ranges on air from ~30*c- 60*Cish. In that ballpark.

175F is only 79.4C P4's seam to work fine at that temprature its when it gets into the hundreds it starts to become sluggish.

twsmit he is talking about Fahrenheit.

No No! not Celcius fahrenheit. I think if it got that hot my house would be burnt up.

LOL sorry my bad, i dont see many people post fahrenheit temps very often. Even us backwards American techies use celcius! hehe

lol you're lying or your probe/ bios readout is wrong,

                              a) the silicon in your processor would start to break down at 100 degree's

                              and

                              b) P4 step down their core speed when you reach about 75 degrees in order to lower the temperature.

From what I've read Amd have 6 clocks per cycle and Intel have 4 clocks per cycle. So an AMD 2.2 ghz would be equal to an Intel 3.4 ghz chip.
