    Intel Strikes Back? OMG!

So yes, seems they are. However i think the prices will be freaky...

At its spring developer conference, Intel pulled the wraps off the upcoming Conroe CPU, dished on quad-core plans, and stuck to its front-side-bus guns

Has the slumbering giant finally awoken? That's the question many were asking after an unusually in-your-face performance from the semiconductor giant at the Intel Developer Forum.

The company ditched its usual boy in a bubble act to call out AMD~ WWE-style. The Company stopped just short of chucking folding chairs into the audience, but it did say that the upcoming Conroe processor will not only outperform today's Athlon 64 FX-60, it'll even kick an overclocked Athlon 64 FX-60 squarely in the family jewels.

The dual-core Conroe uses the new Core microarchitecture, which replaces the Pentium 4's aging NetBurst technology. The core Architecture is the spiritual opposite of NetBurst. Instead of running at ultra-high frequencies, its designed to be more effective when running at lower clock speeds. Where the Pentium D and P4 take two clock cycles to complete a SSE instruction, Conroe can complete those instructions in a single clock cycle. In addition to that, a technology Intel calls Macro Fusion can combine two instructions into one, for even faster processing.

The Core microarchitecture is wider than NetBurst, which means it can process four instructions every clock cycle, versus three instructions per cycle on current-gen chips. The 33 percent gain in bandwith will actually net a peak of 66% gain when the CPU combines instructions with Macro Fusion.

All this, Intel claims, amounts to a CPU that could shift the balance of power back to Santa Clara. In fact, Intel claims that a 2.66GHz Conroe on a 1,066MHz front-side bus with 4MB of smart cache will not only outperform a dual-core 2.66GHz Athlon 64 FX-60, it will easily outperform that FX-60 overclocked to 2.8GHz. In fact, the company demonstrated the latter point at the conference. We always take benchmarking numbers from vendor-built systems with a huge grain of salt, so we plan to test it ourselves when the CPU ships this sumer.

Intel also talked up the sequel to Conroe: the quad-core CPU code-named Kentfield that is essentially a pair of dual-core Conroe dies inside a single CPU package. The quad core Kentfield is expected to make its debut in 2007.

Ever since Intel released its first dual-core CPU, its design which has both cores sharing the front-side bus bandwidth has been criticized. But it appears Intel is sticking to its guns for future CPUs. Intel says its bandwidth tests prove the design offers plenty of headroom for today and the near term. According to Intel, the front-side-bus bandwidth exceeds current maximum memory bandwidth, so the FSB gap that AMD has so skillfully played up isn't really a problem.
    any toughts..

Interesting, i guess we will just have to wait and see how it all pans out. Im sure AMD will have a counter attack, so to say, but yea, wait and see.

      Re: Intel Strikes Back? OMG!

      old news,

and the conroe and it's micro... bla bla bla , it's a freaking joke, don't understand my the wrong way, it will perform better then the current intel and AMD CPU's and with less power consumption.

And don't be scared, AMD have there answer, will be anounced in the time the conroe will hit the streets, they will also shrink to 45Nm with some architecure changes.

BUT, what is the conroe, what is the big deal, do we have something extremely new here ? the answer is NO , here is some small CPU history wich will make you understand, and many articles have confirmed this !!

      - intel is stuck with there P III , can't get more out of it, can't be clocked higher
      - they develope something called netburst , netburst was capable of getting way bigger clockspeeds , but the downside was, much more power was needed for the same performance and the architecture wasn't so effective, never the less, the P IV was born .
      - the P IV had a very long life, and they kept raising that clockspeed with the netburst technologie, but with that raising clockspeed also came the extreme powerconsumption and less performance gain then they wanted.
      - at some point the P IV had reached it limits, clocks couldn't be raised anymore , powerconsumption wasn't normal anymore, performance could be better.
      - but in the mean while, they needed CPU who didn't consume so much for the laptop market
      - so some engineers (Israelis) where developing something for that, and they made the Pentium M .
      - what is the Pentium M ? the P M , is the architecture of the P III , but offcourse with some changes in it, they could use technologies of today etc... so that architecture of the P III got perfected, they also gave it a fast FSB , mem controler etc... and the Pentium M was born, low powerconsumption, low clock speeds , good performance , and no NETBURST in it .

Now, Intel says they started from scratch for the CONROE core with it's microarchitecture, well, this is horseshi t , they used the Pentium M architecture as base and build up from there

so this new CPU, the conroe doesn't have netburst anymore, it doesn't consume lots of power, and with some extra features they could make a very efficient CPU , but they do need some higher clockspeeds , how to do that ?

no problem, technologie of today is able to produce very complicated chips with very small transistors, so they shrinked the CPU to 45Nm , meaning you need even less power meaning you can clock higher and performance will be UBER , and so the CONROE is born .

what have we learned , actualy the CONROE it's father was the Pentium M , wich father was the P III , so the CONROE at the end of the line is a very well tweaked P III architecture in combination with the technologies of today.

So, I ask myself, OMFG, what where those guys doing all those years with those freaking power eating, hot running Pentium IV ??

And AMD at this moment is also working at the 45Nm process for there futere new line of CPU's , so don't think intel has won the battle here

AMDs 65nm CPUs won't be coming out until late 2006 or early 2007. The 45nm shrink will come after that.

you are correct, was messing things up here, it's 65 instead of 45 , also the conroe is 65Nm, not 45 !!

Hey Dark, is a bad idea to post good news about Intel on this forum, just so you know.

                Re: Intel Strikes Back? OMG!

intel has finally realised that clockspeeds are not everytihng

the p4 was built to fight the "gigahertz war" with amd and it won but that didnt mean it won the proccessor war amd just decided to fight the battle another way

its gonna be fun to watch how intel try to show people that higher clockspeed doesnt always mean more power as theyve been going on about their clockspeeds for years

^^ Very true, it will be funny as more and more of the market crosses to AMD. Lower poweer consumption, lower temps, lower speeds, but better performance. The way of the future... AMD.. hehe..

I will probably stay with Intel as my parents work there :)
It would be so nice if the CPU market started to get as competitive on the high end as GPU's are right now.

As for the ghz thing, I'm betting normal consumers are gonna be so confused when the "new sweet Dell" only has 2.4 ghz and the last one had over 4 :)

AMD will have quad core out before Intel. I'll probably wait for 8 core or something before upgrading from my Opter0wn. I bet those quad cores etc are gonna overclock like ****. You'll have a whole family of cores with the good kid, bad kid, slow kid, and retarded kid.

probably not, AMD havn;t even mentioned anything to do with building 65nm chips yet intel is ahead of them at this moment in time.

but yeh ill wait until amd releases its stuff and then see where everything pans out
