Looks good, is the x2-3800+ still have 512kb L2 cache? Or has it been upgraded? Either way looks like I'll be buying one to play with.

I'm not sure about cache yet, but there are rumors that a large L3 cache may be making it's debut with AM2. We'll have to wait and see.

That certainly would be interesting, it couldn't do any harm at this point, especially if those conroe benchies are true. Are you gonna get one of these?

I'm going to do a full upgrade once Vista is released, but I have yet to figure out what I'm getting. Whover is performing the best will get my money.

Good point, if the current trends continue I might actually (*gasp!*) go ati and intel next round.

I'll always go AMD and Nvidia, no matter what is on top. I've stuck with Nvidia since my first 5200 Ultra 4 years ago (I still play BF2 on it from time to time), and since AMD is in Texas (a plant is not quite a 45 minute drive from my house, I get usually free T-Shirts because I have an AMD CPU), I'll always go with those.

You know looking at that list I would assume that the L2 cache for the X2 will go like this:

                Athlon 64 FX-62 AM2 2 x 1Mb
                Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2 x 512kb
                Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2 x 1Mb
                Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2 x 512kb
                Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2 x 1Mb
                Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2 x 512kb
                Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2 x 1Mb
                Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2 x 512kb

This is based on current cache layouts and the screenshot I saw of a 5000+ with 512kb L2 on 65nm.

I'm probably AMD/eVGA/nVidia for life or at least for quite a while. However, aren't you more interested in socket F? Quad Core? heh. I too plan on an entirely new computer once DX10/Vista is released. Which is pretty sick considering I'm about to buy a top end watercooling system for my processor and videocards, just got confirmation for my 7900gt co superclock StepUp's, am buying an Opteron 146 in a week and possibly a new psu if my Hiper can't cut it =P

Socket F will be for servers, and quad core will be coming to AM2 at the end of 2006.

I think I'll probably skip this round, at least until we start seeing quad core, and more things that support multi-threading.

good to see the CPU doesnt cost too much more than currently. guess well have to see about the motherboards. Im going to wait for the AM2 SLi motherboard, and Ill get it all then. I want to keep my SLi.
                        ill go dual core.

^ that, and it supports ddr2 ram, a new technology called virtualization tech (its pretty useless, supposedly lets you run two OSs at the same time), somewhat faster but not really.... and then there are speculations about other things it might support.

its only about a 5% performance increase.
