Is Disabling The Page File Safe ?

I read somewhere that if you have more than a gig of ram u can disable the page file and it could possibly speed up my game . Is this true ? & will damage my computer.

here's my specs if it helps :intel 2.0 , 2 x 1 gig mem. , 9800 pro 128 , xf-i soundcard

Some people say it helps, but it didn't really do much when I tried. I always thought that Windows would use actual hard memory before turning to the page file for virtual ram.
If you have 2 gigs, I'd say go ahead and try disabling the page file, there is a chance that it might help a bit.

i doubt you would see much of a difference. windows will most likley load as much as it can into your ram before it resorts to using page file. plus, i hear some programs use page file to work better. i would just keep it, whats a few gigs on ur HD gonna hurt?

You should not disable the pagefile. When your computer is running out of memory and when you disabled the pagefile, you risk loosing data.

I keep one small fixed 2 gig page fiile on my C:\ the gaming is on a seperate RAID 0 on my system.

I suggest keep the page file.

Disabling the virtual memory will never *hurt* your computer or destroy/lose your data, however it has the possibility of reducing system performance.

Myth - "Disabling the Pagefile improves performance."

Reality - "You gain no performance improvement by turning off the Pagefile. When certain applications start, they allocate a huge amount of memory (hundreds of megabytes typically set aside in virtual memory) even though they might not use it. If no Pagefile (i.e., virtual memory) is present, a memory-hogging application can quickly use a large chunk of RAM. Even worse, just a few such programs can bring a machine loaded with memory to a halt. Some applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) will display warnings on startup if no Pagefile is present." - Source

If u have a gig, adjust your initial and maximum to 500mb. If you have 2 gigs change both settings to one gig. This will not by any means give u a performance boost from hell, but is/are the most logical settings to utilize. And no I won't autograph this statement.

On my old system i had 1.5GB of RAM and turned the page file off. Didn't notice any difference in performance with any apps or games.
Although like the post above, Adobe Photoshop moaned everytime it started, stating that there was no page file.

So best idea if worried about HDD space is to limit the page file size, apart from that i would just leave it alone!!!!

I disabled my pagefile and started getting an error in adobe photoshop, and sometimes my game would crash or windows errors would come up saying "windows is low on memory.... etc" And yes, I have 2 GB of RAM.

I didn't even notice any performance increase, infact, I probably got a decrease, because all the damn errors it was generating..... Anyway, I strongly recommend leaving it. When you have 2GB of RAM windows will probably only resort to the pagefile if it really needs it.
