    Windows Vista + DX10

Now that Windows Vista has been delayed ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4831374.stm ) that will mean that the DX10 cards are delayed till Jan 2007, so thats quite a long time, I was waiting for Vista and DX10, but since they are delayed whats better waiting or upgrading? Im asking this because the 7800GT's have dropped down too £176 now.

I'm just gunna say go for it! Just don't buy all the real expensive stuff if you're going to have to adjust to Vista when it comes out.

It really depends on your monitor size & resolution you run. If 17" @ 1024x768 a 6800 GS or GT 256 will handle it. The higher the re,z the more vid card you need. A 7800GT will run a 19" @ 1280x960 very well. My 6800GT is on a 19" CRT @1280x960 and I'm overclock'n my card and it pushes it pretty hard so I'm getting a aftermarket cooler for now & will build next box with new AMD2 /w DDR2 yet to be released when its out.

Well I have the 6600 256MB PCI-E, tell me what is the 7800GT going to offer in games like BF2, F.E.A.R, im a fps junkie by the way, I don't have any RPG's on the PC but the elder scrolls game looks alright so keep that in mind too.

Despite what people like twismit say, I believe that the first dx10 card from nvidia (g80) will be coming out in june/july so, but you should prob just buy a 7900gt, not too expensive and way better than a 7800gt.

So DX10 cards will be coming out this June/July but WV will be delayed till next year? k, but to build a DX10 system would be more efficient(sp?) than a slightly upgraded system now, bassically DX10 cards have the new SM4 which is the future, and will play all games out now on top settings plus ones comming out after that no?

Well to really sum up my question, With DX10 cards comming out this June/July as you said, would a DX10 system possibly with the new AM2 comming out be more cost effective and efficeint then upgrading a computer now to the last generation of DX9 cards ( if im right in saying that)? Also say you have a DX10 system, would it require Windows Vista? or run better on Vista for that matter?

okay that was kinda confusing, and I do not know if the dx10 are delayed till next year, or still coming out this year. the only benefit of AM2, will be DDr2 basically. more bandwidth. the performance difference isnt much, its like 5% or something. dx10 cards can run vista and xp, and a dx9 card can run both, but cannot play dx10 games and cannot run vista to its fullest.
it really all depends on how much money you have.

Okay bassically, if I do not have alot of money to keep spending on Computer upgrades etc but I want something that will run games on high for a few years or something, am I not better waiting for DX10, therefore its new and will last since its new technology etc, than upgrading now to say a 78/900 GT?

I would get something good now, but give you enough money left over so that in january 2007, you have enough for A. vista and B. a new gfx card.
if you buy a dx10 card this year, you wont be able to play any dx10 games with it because vista is delayed, and by the time vista is out, there will be more better cards most likely. I would say if you can get a 7800gt now for under 240$ american, go for it.

So DX10 games would only run on Vista or only come out when Vista comes out?

When I get a graphics card I like too keep it for quite a long time, not just for like half a year then get a new one, can't afford to do that.

                      Re: Windows Vista + DX10

than just wait. because the 7800gt, even the 7900gtx!!! cannot do dx10.
heres how it will work (i believe)
a dx10 card will run both windows xp, and vista to its fullest abilities. along with that, if you ALSO have vista, you can play dx10 games. and the card can play any previous version of dx. BUT if you have a dx10 card, you can only play dx10 games on vista.

a dx9 card, works with both vista and xp. but cannot use vista's 3d effects to its fullest. it can probably play dx9 games in vista, but no dx10 at all.

it depends really on when these games will be coming out. crysis will probybaly be the first.

                        simple really...
-either you upgrade now, enjoy your equipment until you need to upgrade again.
-upgrade when it comes out, no date is certain.
