well some time in the next 2 months i will be upgrading my cpu, and there r 2 different chips that will be coming out and i need help desiding which one is best for me.
its between the new socket am2, and the new intel conroe core. I will spend about 1000-1200 total on the cpu and mobo
the bench marks look really nice for the new intel chip, but im scared to trust intel after having an intel chip for so long, i have always been told and believed my self that AMD is the way to go but the new intel conroe core looks way better :hmm:.
I play bf2, some source games sometimes, and will be palying qwet and unreal 2k7 whent hey come out.
I also do stuff with maya and i edit video on my computer too.
any help would be helpful

Simple answer... wait two-three months. May/June/July we will actually know something

AMD has not always been the best, usually in the past people only recommended AMD because they were cheaper for "similar" performance, overclocked like mad or because people hated intel.

For the last 2+ years though you are correct, they have been kicking the living crap out of the P4 platform. Conroe looks nice but we just dont know enough yet.

Also there is the real possibility (almost for certain) that there will be bugs and quirks in the initial AM2 and Conroe CPUs/chipsets/entire platform. 6+ months after these ship in early 2007 we should finally see these two mature, until then realize your buying cutting edge stuff and there is a possibility you might get burned... For instance Intel might pull a new socket out of its arse, or introduce a new chipset that will be mandatory for 2nd generation conroe etc...AMD might even release a new kick ass CPU revision with .65nm technology before hell freezes over leaving you with buyers remourse. (right now .65 is targetted for early to mid 2007)

Who knows at this point really?

Well, i would wait till conroe and AM2 come out. AM2 doesn't do much besides go to an inverted 940 socket and use DDR2, as well as a new HSF mount (bad for those who bought nice coolers like the Big T or the XP-120 etc.) I don't know much about teh conroe, so i'll have to look it up.

Then i don't think you can get Conroe or AM2, cause i believe they come out in around june/july. If you do upgrade before summertime, get an opteron, single core or dual core, socket 939. They overclock like crazy.

AM2 will be coming out soon, but conroe won't be coming out until september (at the earliest) so am2 is really your only choice if you must upgrade.

Ya, u won't need to upgrade, since u already have DDR2 ram. I guess u'll HAVE to go with AM2.

Both wrong, AM2 is June 6th 2006, Conroe is July 2006 but might be earlier or a little later.

I heard conroe is delayed and AM2 is on schedule for 6/06.

Also I've seen some screenshots of a 5000+ AMD dual core 2.6Ghz with 2 x 512 L2 cache. It appears to be 65nm and on socket 939.
