    I have a Hiper Type-R modular 580w SLi ready psu. Here is a link to the specs and a picture. This is the color model that I have:

    I was recently told that I have what is considered an "out of date" SLi power supply; meaning that since I only have one dedicated pci-e, and the second is created by splitting two molex cables to a 6pin pci-e, that this may be a strong factor in my SLi peformance problems.

    Here is a thread I started about my SLi peformance:

    It also includes a test I ran last night where I ran each card solo and my entire computer at stock speed (and lowest system fan settings) with 3DMARK05 twice in a row, then swapping between the dedicated 6pin and the molex twin split 6pin. I plan to test the pins with a meter this weekend, but if anyone can confirm that this test proves that each card is getting nearly identical power, you'll save me the cost of a meter and it'd be appreciated. It'd also put me at ease about my PSU because I love it.

    My questions are this: How do I cross off my PSU as a possibe culprit? Is the only way to buy a meter and test every molex and dedicated line? I still don't quite get how dual 12v rails work. I'm not sure what the difference between running 20pin and 24pin (mine can do both and I'm running with 24). I understand why my motherboard needs some extra power from the 4pin near the processor, but why does it need a dedicated molex to the plug just above the 1xpci-e? Compared to my first computer build, this mobo appears to be using twice as many power connections.

    And I've been running the system without that onboard molex plug up until yesterday. Adding that power didn't seem to change anything.

    I'm new to computers. I built my first in August and have been building off of that ever since. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to the higher technicalities in a lot of the hardware, and PSU's are one of them. So any and all advice on the best setup, which things are okay to split and which arent, how to know whether this form of SLi is just as good as the newer revision, etc.

    If your particular model does not have 2x 6pin PCIe power connectors it is not SLI ready.

    Also make sure you have the 24pin ATX connected + the 4 pin 12V connected + any molex/floppy power connectors all attached to the mobo. The link you gave lists the PSU as having 2x 6 in PCIe power, and if yours doesnt it probably isnt suited for SLI.

    The reason you need all the extra power cables is because SLI is new technology and sucks power like no other. ITs very possible that because your 4 pin molex was not connected that your hard drives died, however sobering that sounds.

    But bottom line its unlikely that forgetting the 4 pin molex did cause your issues, im thinking something like the mobo or PSU are faulty.

      Here is the cable configuration for this PSU. It is SLi certified though. It's even on the nVidia website under certified PSU's.

          That's obvious though, and I have that. What they're saying is that you need two 6pin pci-e plugs connected to the psu in order to power two cards at the same time. My card is on the nVidia website as being SLi certified. So it should be fine.

              I have a mid-range SLi setup. And will so even after I get the 7900GT's. This requires a 450-500, and mine is a 580. It requires 26a, and I have 38.

              Sorry, Im suddenly very protective of my psu heh. I love it and hate the idea that it might be the cause of my problems. Like I said, I'll obviously replace it if it turns out to be the problem, but so far it doesn't seem to be. At least not spec wise and not peformance test wise. The deciding factor will be using a meter on it this weekend.

                  I wouldn't trust a software monitor, the only real way is with a voltmeter (or whatever it's called).
