I have a Hiper Type-R modular 580w SLi ready psu. Here is a link to the specs and a picture. This is the color model that I have:
I was recently told that I have what is considered an "out of date" SLi power supply; meaning that since I only have one dedicated pci-e, and the second is created by splitting two molex cables to a 6pin pci-e, that this may be a strong factor in my SLi peformance problems.

It also includes a test I ran last night where I ran each card solo and my entire computer at stock speed (and lowest system fan settings) with 3DMARK05 twice in a row, then swapping between the dedicated 6pin and the molex twin split 6pin. I plan to test the pins with a meter this weekend, but if anyone can confirm that this test proves that each card is getting nearly identical power, you'll save me the cost of a meter and it'd be appreciated. It'd also put me at ease about my PSU because I love it.
My questions are this: How do I cross off my PSU as a possibe culprit? Is the only way to buy a meter and test every molex and dedicated line? I still don't quite get how dual 12v rails work. I'm not sure what the difference between running 20pin and 24pin (mine can do both and I'm running with 24). I understand why my motherboard needs some extra power from the 4pin near the processor, but why does it need a dedicated molex to the plug just above the 1xpci-e? Compared to my first computer build, this mobo appears to be using twice as many power connections.
And I've been running the system without that onboard molex plug up until yesterday. Adding that power didn't seem to change anything.
I'm new to computers. I built my first in August and have been building off of that ever since. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to the higher technicalities in a lot of the hardware, and PSU's are one of them. So any and all advice on the best setup, which things are okay to split and which arent, how to know whether this form of SLi is just as good as the newer revision, etc.
