I realize this might be a dumb question, but I've heard that there are no dumb questions in life. Anyway is it possible to change or replace your processor to get more Ghz. or do you need a new computer? Thank you for taking the time to help me out with this question.:)

Yes it is possible to change your CPU, but it's not all about the GHz. An AMD has less GHz but runs the same as an Intel with a higher clock speed. To change your CPU, you have to find one that is the same socket type.

you want to find the best performance. AMD has much less ghz, but perform much better (the ghz to intelghz ratio).
you CAN switch out CPU's, but the new one has to be compatible with your motherboard, you cant just go out buying any new CPU.

An AMD 3000+ at 1,8 ghz is equilant to a P4 3,0 ghz IIRC.

yes, CPU's are replaceable, just pop out the old one and drop a new one in.

If you could tell us a little more about what kind of computer you have that would help. Often by the time you feel the need to upgrade your CPU it's no longer economically feasable to do so. You will generally be replacing at minimum your CPU and motherboard.

Sorry guys your right my system info would help, so here it is:
Dell Demension 8300
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.6GHz.
1536 MB of RAM
NVIDIA Geforece 6800 GT 256 MB
Remember I am not trying to replace my current system just doing my homework and seeing how I can improve some more. Any comments or ideas greatly appriciated.

you could go for another intel proccessor with the same socket type for example yours i think would be socket 462 this would just be removing the heatsink/fan and taking the proccessor out and push the new one in

or if you want to go with an amd proccessor first you would need a new motherboard with a amd socket such as socket 939 this would mean moving all your pcs components on to the new board and installing the processor

You're close, it's socket 478 actually (socket 462 is the old AMD "socket A").
Providing your motherboard supports prescott P4's, which it looks like it does, the fastest P4 that would fit would be a 3.4GHz. Now when I say the fastest you can get I mean without spending retarded amounts of $$$; the 3.4GHz P4 is around $300+.
So you're getting a 30% faster cpu for about $300. This doesn't mean that games will be 30% faster though because that depends on the rest of your computer too (vid card, ram, etc). If I had to guess I'd say games would get between a 5% and 10% boost. Hardly seems worth it for $300 now does it?

You seem to have enough ram, video card is good (same as I have actually :) ) and although your cpu is not bleeding edge it's fast enough.

If you really have money burning a hole in your pocket look into getting:

- a Sound Blaster X-Fi soundcard: makes a huge difference in games or even just playing movies / music
- get a faster hard drive like a 10,000 rpm Raptor or a fast 7200rpm drive: this will speed up pretty much everything you do on your computer; I lot of people don't realize how much.

I'd advise against getting a socket 939 and an Athlon 64 unless you really have the upgrade bug. AMD is coming out with new stuff in the summer which may be worth waiting for, and Intel is coming out with a new CPU in the fall that will definately be worth waiting for.

I gotta say something because your advice could cause an issue. The last sentence in this paragraph- Not only wrong socket (sry didnt want to bring it up again) and the word "PUSH". If your gonna give hardware advice, make sure you phrase it correctly. There are 2 things on a pc that needs to be pushed (pci, pci-e, agp cards, and ram). NEVER PUSH A PROCESSOR INTO A SOCKET.

To the thread starter- Your processor is fine. Your gonna spend $200.00+ for a newer processor. Dont do it. If your gonna upgrade, please save a little and purchase a pci-e board with a much newer socket. The issue right now with agp and socket 478 is that there are very few decent boards left, let alone they are agp (which is pretty dead). As Roman said- You can go with a faster harddrive, get a 16mb cache on a 7200 rpm, the transfer is faster, the only thing your missing is the seek time. It is not worth it, save your money and future-proof your pc.

Good advice, and I second it! Intel 2.6 will last you until you save up enough money to buy the PCI-E mobo/cpu/graphics.

your 2.6ghz p4 is enough if you play fps games as they are light on the proccessor its the graphics card that does all the work

but if you play cpu intensive games like strategy or MMOs you might want to upgrade
