I will building a new computer, what sites for info?

Hi!

I'm using a intel3.4 ghz, with x800xl, 2gb ram and whatnot.
I'll build a new computer at the end of the year or next year, depending on how good I am at saving

My question to you guys that know alot about this stuff is where can I educate myself more in regards to the new AMDs comming out and all other areas that I need to have a read about? Please share the good websites with graphs and reviews!

I might order a gaming rig through tigerdirect.com with maybe some hardware changes(prob CF or sli) and if there is some set-up thats really really hot please tell me!:)

I was wondering where I can read up on AMD gaming Pcs and et c since I dont know much about them. I'd like to see benchmark scores and stuff you know?! Graphics cards i've got down so far but the other stuff isn't really 'up to date' as of now.

When it's time for me to choose the parts to my uber gaming pc I'm sure I'll come here for feedback.

I do know i'll be getting a AMD, some top version for gaming, 2gb of ram and some top-of-the line card in crossfire, or possibly sli if it's nvidia. It's just that I heard there will be new AMD stuff comming this spring or summer which I'd like to read up on and figure out if I should wait for those or buy something like a AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+ at the launch, assuming they'll drop in price. Also I'd like to get a really fast harddrive but I dont know anything about them.

Havent built a pc yet, but I'm up for it! Currently I'm using a DELL, one of those finished pcs *shrug* - wasnt that the misstake of last year

He isnt buying for 8-9 months.. hehe no point in even trying to spec out a maching that far off. :laugh:


@ the OP, anandtech, tomshardware, hardocp, xbit labs, overclockers.com, ars technica, and the firing squad are all good review/news sites to check up on.

I would say about 75% of your research can be done on the main pages of the sites, and the news articles. The other 25% should be done browsing the forums, and keeping up on current "hot issues" and information that doesnt get posted in the news.

Also about 1-2 months before you buy is the time frame to start specing your system out. Try not to get stuck in the "waiting game" of perpetual just around the corner hardware and technology, but do try and be abreast of technology that will come out in the very near term. It sucks to be one of those people who got a 7800GTX 1 month ago, and had the 7900 series come out 2 weeks ago. People in that position did not do enough research because it was fairly common knowledge for people in the know, since at least december 05 that a refresh was coming in march.

You dont want to be caught off guard saying.. "wow didnt see that coming" but at the same time you want to actually start using the technology so you cant wait forever. Around now would be a good time to start reading and browsing some news and current events, but realize MAJOR refreshes will take place this year, AMD and Intel are launching new CPU's and nvidia and ATI will launch next generation video card at the end of this year around when your going to buy. Once summer is over things will settle down and we will know more, but for now just know that almost all the hardware that is out now will be obsolete by november/december of 2006, so dont even plan on buying any of the parts on the market now if your building in christmas.

I really dont wanna spend alot of money on a new system and then, as you say, go "wow didnt see that coming" I'd fkn break in half....

I heard about the new stuff coming out and all the games will use some other kind of ummm stuff thats going to require new cards and systems to fully enjoy them. that's what I, basically, know **** all about and will be researched. thanks again for the tips:)

And then when the stuff is out and has been tested I'll come here for the approval of my new custom built comp

I'd better get some software on there too so I can actually use it for my studies too...
