What processor should i be looking for, for a gaming pc.

Pentium M, Centrino Dual core, AMD (dont suggest 64s cos they are too expensive)

whats better a pentium M 2.16ghz or a centrino dual core at 2.16ghz?

AMD 64's are not expensive, they are actually very cheap, and compared to their Intel counterparts, worth every cent. I would suggest anything over an AMD 3500+ would be plenty for a laptop to game on, but you wouldnt want to go lower than a 3000+. If you want to go dual core, then the X2 3800+ is a good option, it is the lowest of the X2's but it is cheap and can be OC'ed.

most are good for gaming actually, centrino duo, centrino (i heard is still pretty good), amd 64, pentium 4. just dont get sempron or celeron.

the thing is the actual processor (amd 64) may not be expensive but only the really top end models have it, and what about a pentium M 770(2.13GHz 2MB L2 cache 533MHz FSB)

Obviously the dual core is better, the duo chips are overall faster than the older pentium M.

but they aren't double performance even though there are two processors? what equivalent would a 2ghz duo processor be to a pentium 4 proc?

Probably 3ghz+ in speed. The duo/core line of chips intel is releasing are more or less similar to a Athlon64... shorter pipe, more work per unit. Its atleast a 3ghz P4 if not more.

Dual core is not twice as fast, but there are some improvements outside of just being dual core that make the chips faster.. such as a larger and more efficient cache.

No, both the core duo and p-m are 32bit only.

No, Intel's P-M line and Core line lack 64 bit, you need a Turion, A64/X2, Opteron or late model Pentium 4 laptop.

But ask yourself do you need 64 bit? Do you run a 64 bit OS? Do you have more than 4GB of ram?

im not thinkin about now but when vista comes out i wanna be able to use 64bit

Vista will ship with both (possibly the 32bit first on launch... who knows )

I wouldnt wait for 64 bit, its really only going to become mainstream once we move beyond 4GB of ram, and odds are this laptop will max out at 2GB.. so whats the point? Your future proofing against something that your hardware will never take advantage of.

Sorry to say that with a 64bit OS the biggest advantage is more efficient memory management and the ability to address more than 4GB of ram. Thats about it, and at present there is only a marginal speed improvement in some 64bit optimized apps.

Lets put it this way, your laptop will only be able to play games for the next 2 years at most. (new games) and there will be few if any 64bit games out by then.

Anyways when i buy a laptop its for battery life, portability and size.. but to each his own.
