After 5 months of trial and error, replacing hardware, switching namebrands, switching formats, uninstalling and reinstalling Windows/BF2/Drivers/, trying out Betas, and trying to learn every possible registry hack and optimization suggestion, I seem to have gotten some great news!
A little over a month ago I had nearly given up on my computer. I had already put well over $1,200 into parts and hundreds of hours, and still couldn't play BF2 at the highest settings. And when I finally got my computer optimized, I found out that Special Forces came out the VERY NEXT DAY. I felt confident that my system could now handle anything, and then I patched to 1.1, then 1.12, and then, unfortunately, well... you know.
So I wasn't sure what to try next. I had a great videocard, great ram, a great motherboard. All top name brands, all quality and expensive stuff. I decided one day to just say "Screw it!" and purchased a combo deal by eVGA for $350. Motherboard and videocard. The combo cost about $200 less than my videocard had! How could it be any better?
Well it was, but still wans't perfcect. FEAR and COD2 still brought it to it's knees. So I decided to go SLi and turns out the 7900's were out and a friend was selling his 7800GT. This happened just this past weekend. His card is 2 weeks old or so, and I was happy as could be. Then someone told me this morning about a little program called "Step Up". And this is why I am so happy now.
After a call to eVGA to answer some questions, I'm pleased to announce that after my 7800GT comes and I'm running SLi, I'll be in que for a free upgrade to two 7900GT CO's. Yes. Free. I'll be without a comp for a couple of days because you have to send in your cards first then they send out, but otherwise, free. Oh, and if I decide to go flippin nuts and measure it out (and turns out it'd fit) for $300 I can upgrade to two 7900GTX's. But I probably won't do that heh.
Anyway, considering all the bad news talked about here, I thought I'd share some GOOD news. This also changes my plans on how to finish this computer. I WILL be getting a better processor now, and will probably forgo the PVR plans for now. With this opportunity presented by eVGA, I can now have an almost top of the line pc as a free upgrade that will surely carry me through top end gaming for another year or so. Well, maybe that's a large claim to make, but I'll do pretty well.
