    Another Ram Thread, about timings

Right ive always been told that i cant mix and match ram.

i found out that my two 512mb sticks running as dual have timings of 3-3-3 does this mean that i have to match these sticks to other 3-3-3 512mb sticks?

another thing can i put in a 1gb 3-3-3 stick? i dont know if the matching thing also restricts the size of the ram also.

i would look at the configuration but i have misplaced my motherboard manual and MSI's website says i dont have permission to donwload the manuals

anyone had experience with mixing and matching with a MSI 865pe Neo2 Platinum motherboard?

your motherboard has 4 ram slots, you want to populate all 4 so that you have dual channel capability. Buy 2x 512mb value ram from a good brand like crucial, corsair, ocz and you will be fine.

i already have dual channel capability with 2 slots, what i am asking is can i just match it with any old 3-3-3 timing ram and does it have to all be the same size.

It can be a difference size and brand, but you need 2x more sticks to complete another set of dual channel. There is a chance it wont work, but more often than not you will be ok.

for dual channel, you just need two of the same pin (of course or else it wouldnt fit) and the same exact stick. I am pretty sure you can do dual channel with a 512 stick of corsair and a 512 stick of Geil, but Im not positive. as for the timings, they get automatically downclocked to the slowest one. As an overal suggestion, also mark what ram you have/got, so that when upgrading, you buy the same exact ram again.

thankyou, i wont buy any ram for this pc that has timings that are better than 3-3-3, this motherboard is abit weird and spouts bad english at me if i put 2-2-2 or watever timing ram in "DRAM TIMING TO TIGHTLY!" i seem to remember my taiwanese motherboard saying last time i did that lol.
