help regarding hardware instal

ok, so im planning to install some hardware and stuff in my computer.

i keep reading about hwo you shouldnt do it while yoru standing on carpet due to static charge. thing is, thats all i got in my house, and i dont feel like taking it to the kitchen or the bathroom.

so what can i do to help combat static charge while im on carpet? i have an old plastic DDR mat in my closet....maybe i can lay that down and stand on it?

It's not that big of a deal.. Just touch like the computer's metal and if you don't get shocked, you'll be fine.

I always touch it every 2 or 3 minutes just to make sure I didn't pick up any static somehow..

Yeah.

Another great thing you can do is take a PC power cable, and cut it apart....removing the netrual and positive wires, leaving just the ground. Reassemble it and plug it into the outlet and PC while working on it. It helps ground.

When I built my computer I did build it on the carpet. Hard drive, CD rom was just laying there on the carpet. First of all if you're installing new hardware such as a HD, vid card, ram, another drive, just unplug the computer for five minutes or so, then pop open the case, touch the inside metal to get rid of any static crap. Then Take whatever you had to install and pop it in, whatever your installing leave it on your computer desk and in the wrapping until ready to install.

hmm touching something metal... jeez...

in actual fact if you dont hav a anti-static mat, all you hav to do is to touch the power supply unit ever few minutes to earth yourself, with the power cable removed ofcourse, keeping all food/drink away from the Pc, and it is perfectly fine to add hardware on the floor despite what you see writtin in places

true, but if you buy in parts you can shop around more looking for better deals and saving money :)
