well i am getting a dell XPS 600 system in April
and i was wondering if some people here at totalbf2 have the system desktop
if u do have how is it?
also i am customizing it to 500GB.
Whats your opinion on the desktop?

Hey Hey Hey, first off i would like to say i do own a dell XPS, did i pay for it no, it was a gift from mother and father, and once i hooked it up i told them i hated them for buying me such a ****ty peice of ****, i also let them know that i hate them. Morale of the story listen to AFEDSLAYER, go to pricewatch.com or newegg.com for some decent prices on computer parts.

It depends on how cost competitive your Dell is against a custom build or a boutique system builder.

Personally i despise pre assembled computers like dell, but if its what your aiming for, and its similar in cost it not that bad of a deal.

Two things to keep in mind however. First off all the Pentium 4 is dead and will be basically discontinued by the end of the this year. The new Conroe chips will be out by fall, and they promise to bring a 20% speed increase over the current Athlon64 chips. If you must shell out massive cash for a Dell it would suck to get the last generation of slow, obsolete technology.

The other consideration is the video card. Dell allows you to custom configure a video card and i heavily recommend doing so. DO NOT just accept the standard run of the mill x1300 XT video card and expect to play current and future games with all the eye candy and high FPS. Right now even with a slower "obsolete" pentium 4 the biggest impact in gaming is related to the video card. That does not mean get a $1000 SLI system, but it does mean you need to place the majority of your gaming budget in the video card. If that means getting a 3rd party card off newegg for cheaper, so be it, but do not waste your time with the standard configuration.

For instance my cousin got a "gaming" laptop from Dell with a 17" monitor and an x300 card. He cant even play World of Warcraft at the native resolution with more than 10FPS... really sad because he has a beautiful 17" high resolution display and he has to game interpolated and with crappy visuals.

with just 800 and alot of time on hand i could build a computer that would be alot better than an XPS, the key is to know who to go to for certain things, or go to your nearest bestbuy and ask them what the have for five finger discount.

Only people who have no idea about computers buy Dells, Alienwares, or some other expensive piece of crap. Computers are so easy to build these days. You just snap together 5-10 parts, put in a few screws, done.

you guys seem to have a lot to say about desktops, but what about laptops. my budget's pretty low but i'd be willing to workfor a little extra cash to insure i don't get a piece of c***. any suggestions?

Yeah, and considering it costed them like $1000.. (I don't know the price of an XPS)
