Fried video card?

When a video card gets fried, does it literally start smoking or can it look normal but just wont display anything?

It can look perfectly normal and still be dead.

Hey man you replied like 20 seconds after I posted, thanks! Yeah, my friend was installing a new video card, apparently on carpet w/o grounding himself (geez) and now his computer does not boot. Blank screen, but the fans on the card are spinning. So that would rule out the PS, right? The old card still works, so the problem most likely lies in the video card. thx

When a video card is fried it has a golden brown coating all over it. Tastes like chicken.

Wreck.. don't make stupid posts cause he is looking for the right answer. When its fried.. it just means it wont work.. and i think the fans run sperately.

Correct. The fan may still be spinning but the core or memory may be cooked. These are the two crucial parts of the board. The only way to test is to buy another card and test it, or to test the card in another system. Preferably both.

Seriously though, if a different card works in the same system, he prob fried it.

But it could also be the CPU or mobo couldnt it.. does it boot the BIOS or not? if it doenst get that far then its prob not the vid card but something on the mobo or the RAM.

The only real way to find out is to swap each part with a known working part until you figure it out.

when dabs.com sold me a faulty motherboard & graphics card which then proceeded to fry 2 gb's worth of ram :@, the screen was currupted and blocky kinda like when you get artifacts on an overheating card but the screen was one big artifact lol.


does he have a motherboard with a d-bracket or watever they're called on other manufacturers board's, a diagnostics tool of some kind, usually like 4 LED's which light up in patterns at each stage of the boot up procedure.

Or maybe the new card draws a lot more power? Allthough I don't know if that would only show up when using 3D.

If you don't get any sort of post message either the numlock, caplock, etc lights flashing or an audible beep it is most likely not simply the video card.
If a system won't post at all it is usually the MB, CPU, or power supply. Most mb's can post with a beep error if there is no memory or bad memory so I doubt it would be that.
To test video (and I would suggest this to anyone that builds there own) buy a cheap old pci video card and hold onto it. Easiest thing in the world to do is throw in an old reliable pci video card to check it. Unless of course you're dealing with some seriously old ISA systems then I would just say chuck the damn thing and pony up.

When its over heating I know there are boxes all over the screen, sometimes white or green (the colors ive had) and I usually just close bf2 or anyother game and then im fine. Not sure about fried though never had it happen, although it would be a good excuse to buy new everything
