There are a ton of how to guides on the Net so I would use several to ensure you understand what they are talking about in the guides.

Please remember that you won't get a decent consensus from these or any message boards. There will be as many opinions as there are options. Take all components and opinions into consideration, set your budget and then pick the best components you can based upon that budget.

In my opinion, it is best not to skimp on the PSU or motherboard/chipset. Those are the two most important and overlooked components that affect overall system performance and stability.

For sure, like he said there are all sorts of opinions out there. My personal observation on these boards is that 3/4 of the people have no idea what they are talking about, or have an endless supply of their parents money to spend.

Do some critical analysis, get some different opinions and try to put things into perspective, dont spend $500 for alll the newest wizbang features, because by the time they come into play, your system will be too slow to implement them.

For instance shader version 1.4, sure the R8500 had an advantage over the GF3 shipping with it, but even though the r8500 will play BF2, no respectable person would be caught dead playing BF2 with that card. Same thing goes for SLI and 512Mb video cards. There are acceptible applications for such new technology, but the average gamer, let alone average person will never use them, and its a waste of money.

            As for a guide....

ignore the futuremark forums for the most part, they promote a bunch of hype using their synthetic bencharks... but their forums have great stickies

Here is a place you can ask around for advice and not get your head bitten off. Anandtech is one of my favorite hardware sites/forums, nice people that have a hardcore enthusiast edge, but at the same time they are not so extremely technical or soley after higher 3dmark numbers or tyring to overclock to 5ghz on a phase cooling device that they look down upon anyone who doesnt.

EDIT: Damn all those buides are 4+ years old... crap letme find you another link....

Try this site www.overclockers.com They have always helped me out. I just built my first one as well(in sig). Just make sure you have a lot of room where you are building it and take your time. Good luck.
