    High Density RAM

My cousin is selling parts from his PC and he was going to give me 2GB(DDR 400) of "high density" or CL3 RAM. I've heard this doesn't work on most older MOBOs. Will it work with all the new socket 939 boards with PC3200?

    PS. 100th post!

"high density" is a marketing/sales term. On most 512mb ram you can get 32MBx8 and 64MBx4 chips - the silicon density is *exactly* the same. Most 1Gb modules are 64x8 and 128x4 configurations. The higher 128x4 may not work on your board.

Ok, thanks. Just wanted to make sure, because I can get 2GB of CL3 for $90.

Do you know what density it is? Because I am pretty sure that the 128x4 only works on VIA and SIS chipsets, except on Asus boards. It will not work on Intel or NF4 chipsets.

Pretty sure. It will either not boot or only recognize half of the dimm. The problem is that most motherboards are only made to recognize the ram density at the time the board was made. Only recently have the 1Gb sticks moved to higher density 128x4.

Do you know what kind of MOBO I can get that works with 128x4?

                  EDIT:

Are you sure this isn't registered ECC server memory?

Only with VIA & SIS Chipsets (excluding ASUS motherboards).

What is your ram budget and what video card are you getting? Here is a good budget 2Gb set:

                            Vid cards in my sig

Ram budget is like up to 80. I might get XMS, but IDK cuz that Hyper-X RAM seems pretty good.
