quick psu question!

hey. i am buying a radeon X1600 and it requires a 420W psu or greater. Since i have some 300W antecs laying around will i be able to use one for my card and motherboard. and the other one for my drives and fans? Most of my fans connect by molex anyway. Also there is another slot for a power supply in my case. So do you guys think this will solve the problem of me not wanting to go buy a 500W psu, since i have like 5 other psu already?

yes you couldddd, but it won't look very pretty... just like you gutted out your pc....try to sell all of those antecs and save up for a 500w please, for the sake of keeping dust out of your pc

I seriously doubt it requires a 420 minimum. The literature I have seen says 350+ with a fully loaded system.

If you only have a single HD, single optical drive, that Antec should run it OK until you can get a newer/better PSU for future cards useage.

You can run the card and motherboard from one absolutely. The card only really requires about 250watts of power by itself (if that) so they add in additional hardware.

sweet i took out my other hd since i have a 250gb one now. took out my dvd burner, dont need it right now. so will i be able to run with that card, 1 hd,1 optical and like 4 case fans?

Again, I would say yes.

But...you should still be saving up for a good quality PSU over 400watts for your next card and to ensure this one has no troubles. 26amps or better on the 12v rail. 15amps or better on EACH of a dual 12v rail PSU.

Working, and working 100% are two different things. You can make do for a while, but I don't think I'd keep it permanently this way just to be safe.

abtomat74 is correct, amperage at the +12v rail is more important than raw wattage. The tollerance is +/- 5% so I bet you will be fine.

It wont hurt to try it out to see. If you have any stability problems or if your voltages drop below the +/- 5% range variance range, you will know to get a higher amperage PSU.
