I'm looking at having two independent RAID configurations in the same computer. Unfortunately, I'm not the best at finding specific answers with Google, and the people I've talked to so far use the word "theoretically" too much. I plan to call the maker of my motherboard but figured I'd spur some conversation at my favorite site as well (TotalBF2.com).
So, here's the deal: RAID 0 (striped) between two 10,000rpm Raptors. I already have one, plan to buy another. RAID 1 (mirror) between two SATA150 250gb 16mb Caviar's. I'd like to use my onboard SATA ports if possible, but I'm not sure if you can run two independent RAID configurations at once with the same controller. My specific motherboard is eVGA 133-K8-NF41 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX. Since I only have 3 pci slots, I don't want to have to use a pci RAID controller. I already have a sound card, and a pci usb card. I am still considering putting a PVR card in, so I want to keep that third slot available.
The RAID 0 will be for OS, programs and games, while the RAID 1 will be for stand alone data (music, movies, files) as well as the page file. The desired result is A) Even faster and more efficient gameplay (RAID 0) and redundant protection against drive failure (RAID 1).
I already understand the risks of RAID 0, and thats why nothing important will be on them. I do plan to use a batch file to backup game saves, Firefox bookmarks, etc to the RAID 1.
