Ever since my data drive failed and I've been relying on my Raptor, I've been experiencing some STRANGE activity. Interestingly, but coincidently I'm sure, this all happened on the day of the 1.2 release. (I mention it only because it's kind of funny, not because I'm so crazy as to think a patch destroyed a hard drive and corrupted my computer).
Basically the problem is this: Nearly every download and patching fails. Even pictures fail to load properly from time to time in Firefox. Sometimes the header graphic for this very site will load as corrupted and only half will be visible while the rest is a digital wasteland.
Two specific problems I experienced was patching BF2 and installing 3DMARK05 and 06.
BF2: Around 11pm , 1.2 was released in Germany. Many people used those patches, and I was one of them. After three downloads failed, I decided to wait until the official release. Once the official release came out, I downloaded from the fastest sites I could find and every patch, incrimental and full, failed. I uninstalled BF2 and Special Forces and reinstalled everything. The 1.1 patch during Special Forces installation failed twice before it finally took. Final: the 1.2 patch never fully took either. BF2 plays fine, but Special Forces (which I don't really play much of anyway) did not patch properly.
After doing a CHECKDISK run, that's when the patch at least got BF2 working, and also that's when I finally got both 3DMARK's installed without a problem. I think it was moreso based on the fact that after CHECKDISK, I now automatically log into ADMINISTRATOR (compared to the user JOFABA that I was originally on).
It doesn't happen all the time. I download (by download I mean both to my computer permanently and also temporarily as regular internet use dictates) quite a bit since I got to graphically heavy websites. But videos like the red/blue linked to from the 1.2 bug sticky, and the EA HATES ME video making the rounds, both fail. I've tried streaming and downloading and they always fail at the same point.
Now someone else I know is experiencing these same exact problems. The only thing we have in common is our videocard. I really doubt a videocard could do this.
I know this was the longabout way to explain my (our) problem but I figured the more information given the better. If anyone has any ideas what might cause this (besides a router/internet issue because this is not the only computer on this connection in the house and the other person is not experiencing these problems) I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance from me (and I'm sure the other guy appreciates it too).
