The boards out today were not really designed to handle that much ram and neither was windows XP.

If you get that much ram and don't have a server board I wouldn't go as far to call it stupid, but what the heck, it's stupid.
lol not getting 3 gigs to show off, I was just gonna do it to save my two ram sticks i have now :) but i think im gonna ditch these two than...

Well with all my old un-needed parts I either sell them or donate them to less fortunate PC's that usually belong to family members. I understand wanting to utilize parts you had, but there are times when you just have to clean out the closet.

I also know alot of people don't know enough about PC's to make a conclusion which is why we have forums. I'm not downing you for wanting 3Gb, but it's just not necessary or wise to do it at this time. I don't see needing more than 2Gb until the relase of BF3.

k anyways bf3 means three times the bugs means three times the ram, I think bf3 will need 6 gigs of ram atleast if they keep making ****ty engines for the battlefield games...

well thnx for the advice, going to put 2 x 1 gigs in and 2 x 512 out :)

I have 3gb of Corsair CL2 EFX DC Memory. My 3DMark06 score changed 7 points, but I didn't expect any change, considering that 32bit Operating systems like WINXP won't utilize, although they do recognize it, more than 2gb ram

"The virtual address space of processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB unless the /3GB switch is used in the Boot.ini file. When the physical RAM in the system exceeds 16 GB and the /3GB switch is used, the operating system will ignore the additional RAM until the /3GB switch is removed. This is because of the increased size of the kernel required to support more Page Table Entries. The assumption is made that the administrator would rather not lose the /3GB functionality silently and automatically; therefore, this requires the administrator to explicitly change this setting"

I run Dual channel inline with 4x 512 meg sticks. My dual channel requires the sticks to be identical on my ASUS motherboard. The sockets are different in colors on a pair because if you mix ram or use only one socket or three (Out of 4 total) you will be placed in single channel.

Others have already beaten me to this post with many good answers. Sorry if my information is redundant.

So does that mean XP CAN utilize 3GB of RAM but u have to do that boot ini thing to get it to do so?

2 x 1 Gb is an excellent setup. Im using it down on my Dual core, no troubles at all. Ditch the 2 x 512 would be my opinion, you could using them in the other slots but I wouldn't. Not too much of a perfomance gain.

                          Just a little academic exercise.

Outside of synthetic benchmarks you can see the affects of both higher timings and 1T vs 2T.

In games and almost everything (read the previous pages of the review) its +/- a couple percent at most, nothing to get worried about.

EDIT: Note that at extemely low resolutions, sure better timings help, but once into the 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 resolutions, no difference at all.

That doesn't also factor in the loss of dual channel.

Yes, but it can destabilize your machine.
