Is my GPU too hot?

I have an XFX GeForce 6800 GT 256 MB AGP card...

I didn't really pay attention to temperatures until I started playing around with CPU overclocking...

Now I'm realizing that my GPU temps seem aweful high.

Idle: 55-57 C
Running BF2: 75-90 C

And these are at stock speeds. Overclocking the GPU leads to a few higher degrees Celsius.

If I open my case and blow a floor fan at the card, it only brings down the temp to the low 80s while playing BF2.

Does this sound rather high to anybody else???

What should I do? It doesn't make sense that I should have to buy a 3rd party cooling solution to get this card running at stock speeds...

I'm not getting artifacting or anything. I get occasional crashes to desktop..but so do lots of people.

that's rather hot, my friend's 6800 gt gamers edition asus something onlygot about 68 C with a 50 mhz overclock with stock cooling but than again the 6800 gt is a hot card and can handle a lot... i presume your heatsinks are all clean... good airflow ???

if you want to overclock, i do recommend third party cooling, like AC or zalman.. both gr8 and really easy to install.. maybe the cooler was just put on really bad and they used too much thermal compound (was the case with my previous card x600) it got really hot aswell...

so i think the temps are hot, but doable.. but if you want to overclock get some other cooling that should clear the problem...

sounds fine for a gpu, if you get artifacts then worry.

Yeah, no artifacts...

Air flow feels great in the case...it feels cool all around inside there and there is cool air being sucked in the front, and I feel cool air blowing out of the back.

I just cleaned the inside with compressed air, but no improvement.

I'm beginning to think these temps are normal for this card..YIKES!

This card just has to last me long enough to take the plunge to PCIe and a 7800GT/GTX.

yes video cards can have very hot temps. My 7800GT's default drivers have the thermal shutoff at 115*C... LOL That the default the nvidia drivers et.

Well, I was just at 93C with no artifacts.. /shudder

It's amazing that it drops 20 degrees in a matter of seconds.

Yeah..runs fine. I've never seen an artifact.

That app doesn't seem to make much sense.

It doesn't seem to be detecting everything properly.

Besides, it's giving me 2 things (via LM75) that it is detecting 127 C on constantly.

It doesn't seem to be picking up the GPU temp monitor.

I think I figured it out...the nVidia control panel is showing the temp as 10 degrees higher than it actually is.

The SpeedFan app is showing my raw GPU temp data. The ambiant temp matches, but the GPU temp is always 10 degrees lower than what nVidia is telling me.

That's a GOOD thing!!!

the fan on my 6600gt stopped a week or so ago and i didnt notice, it went up to 110 degrees in bf2 before it started artifacting. i immediately shut it down and replaced the fan, it seems to have not suffered any damage.
it idles at around 55 degrees, i dont know what it goes up to under load. thats overclocked, mind you, i think its at 550mhz gpu.
i looked and the gpu thermal shutoff on the 6600gt is set to 145 degrees by default. lol

90 is not good. even 80 is pushing it, sorta. i wouldnt wanna idel at anything more than 47, or load at more than 80. personally, of course.

Well, taking into account what SpeedFan is telling me, I'm idling at 47 and loading at 82.

Meh, What I did was got a 80mm Antec fan, Go thumbtacks (Glutac here) and some smjall wooden kebab skewers, placed it on top of my GPU and now my case is 3 degrees cooler and same with my GPU. However I could have just got a fan slot but eh, works like a charm

Wow, that's hot temperature. Are u ABSOLUTELY sure that you have good airflow (good ariflow imo is a good 120mm fan at front bottom, and a good 120mm fan at rear top)? Also, Dust off everything, not just the GPU, it could be ambient heat from the CPU. And talking about CPUs, if you have a P4, ur temps will be higher in ur GPU than if you have an A64, cause P4s are very hot, and they have a hot ambient temp. Anyways, i really feel bad for u, i get idle 33C and load 50C on stock cooling (load is when i run 3dmark06), and somehow, my CPU is down to 19/20C idle, and 26C when running Prime 95 torture test (don't ask how i get these temps, i have no idea at all, i think it's just good airflow, nothing in my case is over 35C idle, and never over 55C load, kinda wierd).
