I am going to sell this Corsair XMS 2 X 512MB RAM to a friend and I want to know what you think is a fair price. I purchased the RAM for $183 and I have used it for around 6 months. Thanks in advance!

Well i would sell it like 10 to 15 bucks less than what is being sold at this moment since ram does not really go bad. Plus it has lifetime warranty. But since you got it cheaper, and he is your friend i think 170 is reasonable. Me personnally i would not pay that much for just one gig now days, but that's just me. -

actually RAM does go bad. RAM can fail just like any other component in your system and the more it is used the higher the chances of it failing, although they can even have errors or be DOA from the factory. especially these days with just about *everyone* overclocking their RAM, their lifespan is shortened.
first thing you want to do is run memtest-86 on it, and let it go through at least 5-6 cycles of its testing operations to make sure there is nothing wrong with it.
after that, i would start at around 2/3 of the price in the store. i, personally, would never buy used RAM - especially not for $10 savings. if its your friend, sell it to him for $100 and you should both be happy. you got 6 months of use out of it, and by late summer DDR and 512 meg sticks of RAM will be obsolete.Comment

lifetime warranties arent always transferrable. and sometime down the road being able to mail in your RAM and possibly get a replacement 8-10 weeks later isnt a viable option for me. i need my system working, i cant afford to have a system with no memory while i wait for a replacement.

personally i wouldnt pay more than $100 for 6-month old used RAM that will shortly become obsolete, if you dont consider 2x512 obsolete already. i wouldnt ask more from a friend either - this is a friend hes talking about, not some pansy on ebay. thats still recovering over half your investment on something youve used for over half a year. again this is my opinion, some people will say more and others will say they wouldnt buy used memory period. he didnt ask 'whats the most i can get for this memory' - ideally he could sell it to some unwitting comp illiterate person for $500. he asked whats a fair price to sell this memory to a friend.
youd have to be absolutely out of your gourd to buy 6-month old RAM from someone for a $10 discount on $183. i mean seriously, whats the point? to save $10? pfft.
and if my friend tried to offer me that deal i wouldnt consider him very much of a friend. the whole point of secondhand deals - especially between friends - is that both parties are supposed to come away happy and satisfied. selling someone used ram at a whopping $10 discount wouldnt exactly make them happy when they found out how much it cost. not to mention with the amount of rebates and price fluctuations in memory chhances are hell be able to get it for less than that 'discount' anyway.Comment
