    another question

I need to know if i can turn my vid cards power on first or the entire system? im running a seprate power supply for my vid card other then the default one inside the case. its "external" because its located on the outside but will running that cause a problem. i want to know if running the card first and system second will cause any problems.
if there is a big problem might i be able to wire the 2nd power supply to turn on as the rest of the computer dose as i push the on button.

please feel free to give some links for help for things like this. thankyou for your help.

          Re: another question

You are just messing around here, if you want to do something, do it good.

First off al , give some details man, are those both ATX PSU's ?

in that case, the PSU feeding the vid card won't delever power to the vidcard, even if you turn the PSU on , it needs to get the signal to triger it on .

you need to trigger by connecting the green wire to one of the black wires, then the PSU will start to deliver power .

if there was an order to turn on, it would be vid card first and then pc , because else the pc will give an error while booting because the vid card gives you a problem .

Will it break the vid card ? I don't thing so, the vid card will just get it's power, but won't start consuming it because it doesn't get any signals from the pc .

Now, actualy, the best thing to do is go to the shop and buy a good PSU that can give the power you need

            Re: another question

hmm.. so if its on but still conected to the system through the motherboard it will not get the signal to concume power?

              what do you mean ?

              the video card?

if so, well, it's like this, you put a molex from another PSU on the vid card, wich is on (meaning you connected green and black wire from the 20 pin ) .

no problem, the vid card gets a voltage but it isn't on , meaning there are no Watts or Amperes running true it .

Look I am also not 100 % shure of this only 99% , but if your vid cards has nog signal from the motherboard, it has nothing to do, doesn't have to show something on screen, nothing at all, so it will problably just off untill it gets it's trigger from motherboard .

                Re: another question

I'm going to have to agree with rombaft, all his suggestions / points sound reasonable.
If you want to be 100% sure though you could post in a hardware forum like hardforum.com or over at forums.guru3d.com where they specialize in vid cards.

But now you have me curious...why do you have separate power supply for your vid card?

EDIT: never mind, just saw your other thread

its not hard. just turn on both PSUs then press the 'on' button of your PC. When the card needs power it will draw it through both the graphics slot and the power input attached.

and what green wire? There is no fricking green wire.

                    Re: another question

teapot is saying what im saying. im going to go to the other forum sugested to see what i need to do.

i will connect the vid card to the system. im not going to just connect the power supply to the card and the card to nothing. i didnt think the power supply is told by the system to give stuff power. i just thought the power supply ran and when a thing needed it it would use it.

maybe you are some colourblind, but look at the picture, there is a green wire, this is the one the mobo connects true to a black cable (groun) for turning the PSU on http://images.anandtech.com/reviews/...775/24to20.jpg

                        Re: another question

Actualy I have an idea for the topicstarter to make a bit practical .

buy yourself a powerswitch like this

                        or something like it.

then you cut the green wire on the 20 pin plug of and cut one of the black wires of on the 20 pin plug .

Extend these green and black wired to the switch and mount them to it (solder it, or just with a clip) , then mount this switch next to you powerswitch of the pc .

This way you can leave the PSU on without any problem, won't give power anyway, and if you want to turn on the pc, turn on this powerswitch (PSU starts giving power to vid card) and turn power on of the pc , then it's just click click and pc is on and everything has power

                            I will try.
with even a more practiacal idea without cutting directly to the PSU plug .

Buy an 20 pin to 24pin adapter like on the picture under here, costs about 3-5$ and sold on every online shop or proper pc store .

mount the 20 to 24 pin adapter on the 20 pin adapter of the PSU you want to use for the videocard ., then cut the green wire on the adapter (there is only one green) and cut one of the black ones (doesn't mather one, they are all grounds) , on the pictuer under here, you can clearly see the green wire .

Now you have two loose wires, then you buy a powerswitch , just go to a store where they sel electronic parts or something, they all have powerswitches in every size , buy one you like, but it must be an on and off switch , those have two pins on them , just connect the green wire to a pin and the black wire to a pin (doesn't mather on wich pin, you can switch them) .

now when you switch the powerswitch on, the PSU it's 12v is giving power, and can feed you vid card, so the only thing you need to do is mount it in your system, glue the button on your case or something or dril a hole where it fits in .
