    Overclocking 6800 GT with less than recommended PSU

    What can happen? I have a 250 watt supply. Im getting a new one soon. I just got a EVGA 6800 GT and I have the program coolbits installed. So I was wondering what can happen if I overclock it with less than recommended power supply. They recommend a 350 watt. Also Ive been running it on my 250 watt supply is that dangerous?Is overclocking with stock fan dangerous? Any feedback would be nice.

    Since I have this thread I am wondering what are some good aftermarket fans that are relatively cheap. I want to put one on my cpu and my video card. MY CPU is socket 478 Pentium 4 2.66 GHZ my video card is EVGA 6800GT AGP.

      Leave it stock right now, then play around with it when the new psu comes in.

          The most you would notice is instability. But the problem is that over time, a weak or inadequate PSU will damage the circuits on your mobo and CPU as well as strain the capacitors on the mobo. I would replace the PSU asap.

              I have one on the way with UPS as we speak. I am wondering if using the card like this for a week or two max will have any long term affects, also same thing using my card for a week or two overclocked, would that be really bad?

                  you should have the recommeneded PSU even at stock settings with no OC, 350W to 250W is hella dangerous. damn, is says MINIMUM recommneded wattage 350. ugh, just pray man, repent.

                      Ya, if i were u, i would put the graphics to all low until u get a new PSU, or else the thing will prob get bogged down from the need of power from teh GPU and die. My old PSU did that, except teh prob was it was a generic one, that had like 15A on the +12v rail. Died in like 1 and a half months.

                          So do you think I should put my old 6200 in until my PSU gets here?

                                      Thats an interesting PSU. I'm not sure if that's the best choice, but it is only 10 bucks. THe +12v rail is prob just enough to get by with 20amps on it. Also, the company that makes the PSU is a no-name company.

                                          The price was right thats for sure. All the ones in stores around me start at about 70$ canadian before tax. I figure if this is good enough, Ill just keep it but if it turns out to be crap it will tide me over until I have a better idea of what I'm doing, because as of now I've been reading about all this +12v rail 20 Amp stuff and I really have no clue what is what. I saw 550 Watts and figured it was good enough, just might not last forever.

                                              yup. i dont know much but i do know that with your current power supply, youre lucky to be running bf2 stably (is that a word?). im surprised you dont crash to desktop a whole lot (because i do, even with a good psu, although i did overclock)
