external power supply

i got my computer. hate dell. i want to run my 7800 gt with the recomended wattage.

i fugured if i could wire it to an external power supply not hooked to the crappy dell power supply it would work..

if you could help me find some "external power supplys" or whatever you guys call them please just put a few links up meybe. thanks if you try. if ya dont. thanks for looking.

i think i might just buy a whole power supply and put a few plugs only into my vid card.

anyone got some cheap power supplys i could use?

He/you might have the same problem as me where either the wires for the PSU are pretty much unreachable(/behind an odd looking cage ) or are seemingly cemented in. Except mine is a Sony

Thus, I did this:

It was a more powerful power supply I had laying around cause I wanted to put it into my pre-built. The wires for the original PSU weren't long enough to stretch to sit on my desk, so ...I used a GameCube as a stand. The 2nd PSU is on top, only plugged into my video card (e-GeForce 6600GT AGP)

Dells warentys are a bit different. in most cases you can open up your computer add/remove parts without voiding the warenty.

My dell laptop I can do whatever I like with and it doesnt void the warenty, in fact they tend to ship out spare parts (if you need them) and just let you install them yourself.

Look, it's a psu made specifically for dell computers. If you're not sure about the warranty, call dell up and ask them.

says something about. if a part fails that isnt dell and causes dammages to the other dell parts then they arent resonsible for it.

im going to do someting like dave and just run a wire to the card and keep the power supply to the other parts.

Well, be careful though, all I can say is results may vary. I don't know anyone else who's done this. But so far, my card hasn't fried yet.
Also, my warranty is most likely voided.
other random notes:
-2nd power supply has twice the wattage (450w), but only connects to video card
-Paper clip is used to jump the wires (Google it, i forgot the keywords though)

I Wish you luck lavadisk (if you do attempt this), hopefully you'll get the same performance gain as I did (well.. somewhat, I got 5 fps out of it on low, still can't play it smoothly on medium settings =/) and NOT fry your card.

paper clip.... i think ill just unconect the stuffs that hooks to the vid card and connect the card to the new power supply. then the conection to the motherboard will work fine.. i hope. will it?

lol it looks like you gutted your computer. if i had an old computer that i didnt need i would have a case. just all the parts hooked together layed allover a table. that would be awesome.

um.... I'm not sure really.... eheh.. I just left the original PSU hooked up to whatever it was hooked up to, and just plugged the 2nd into the video card. I used a paper clip to make it think it was hooked up to a computer, thus allowing it to even turn on by itself.
