HD problem(i think)

I just installed a new motherboard, cpu and vid card.

the problem is when windows starts to boot up it asks if I want to start in safe mode, start regularly, last known good config. etc. No matter what I click though it goes to the windows screen with the loading bar and hten flashes a BSOD then restarts

the exact message looks like A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. other crap

check for viruses on your computer(or alteast thats what it looks like) ****(completly unreadable word) any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive *** ?make sure it is properly configured and terminated. run cm?disk ?/f? to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer.

The hard drive was fine when before this.



is it possibly those wires that plug into the colored slots(bottom left in this pic incase your unsure what im talkin about http://www.unitycorp.co.jp/images/im-products/im-s939/im-a8v-e_se/a8v-e_se.jpg )


I dont think its the wiring that is wrong though because hte hard drive is detected. I didnt reformat my HD before or roll back my drivers.

Well, find your XP CD and boot from CD and try repairing your installation. That or use the recovery console to load a restore point (if youve made any)

What kind of drive is it? SATA, SCSI, PATA?

sounds like a crash.... just do a new windows install

repairing the installation is obviously the first choice, as opposed to wiping out any data he has.

Also once he gets to the console he can run CHKDSK before he repairs to see if the disk is phsyically messed up.

i tried doing the recovery but it says no harddrives are installed.

So windows doesnt know your harddrive exists at all?

Does the harddisk show up in the BIOS?

Did you try booting from the XP CD to do the system repair?

Yes boot from your CD windows doesnt reqnise(spelling) the new hardware..boot up in the cd and do the repair feature.

Maybe I didnt say it clearly I tried doing the repair but it doesnt recognize my hard drive. to be exact it says there is no installed hard drive.

I have an SATA wire and a power wire in the hard drive. the sata wire is plugged in the number 1(of 1 and 2 spots). The hd is recognized in the bios though and is the boot priority. Am I missing anything?

You will need the SATA drivers for the motherboard. If its on the CD, you have ot make a diskette withit, if its on a diskette your ready to go.

Stick the XP CD in, it wil say "press F6 if you need to load any third party RAID or SCSI drivers". When you see that, press F6...and it will go about its business. After a little while it will ask you to insert the disk containing the drivers, do it and it will install the driver for your HD. THEN it goes to the "do you want ot install, or repair windows" page as normal. Do the repair from there.

If you've upgraded this hardware without doing a fresh install of windows, I'd recommend you do so. Sure, you may get it to run without a fresh install, ie repair, but expect some quirkyness with how the system runs. If you didn't uninstall your video card before the change, that could be your problem.

bah, my floppy drive is broken. think it will be easier to put in the old parts and then back everything up format it and reinstall windows?

That would be easier, as repairing can sometimes be a pain.

Often times when you switch chipsets windows ends up giving you no choice but a reformat and reinstall.

The change in graphics card may have everything to do with the BSOD though. I personally think that's why. Also, if your puting in new hardware, you should start fresh, that's just the proper way imo.

You've bought a new motherboard cpu chip and vid card, you owe that hardware a clean install.

The graphics card shouldnt be causing the BSOD, but it could be contributing overall.

See, switching chipets drastically hinders windows from knowing whats going on with the system. On top of that he is getting requests from the video card that windows doesnt know yet.

My (educated) guess is that the chipset is causing the BSOD, and a fresh install WOULD be the BEST idea, but repairing it might work as well.

A fresh windows install is always the BEST solution, if you arent risking data loss. Nothing like a clean install.
