    defragging

I dont know much about the whole concept of defragging your harddrive. what exactly are fragmented files? what does defragging do? how does it help? etc. Thank a bunch, to anyone who answeres about it.

also: is there any way to help prevent fragmentation because my computer is fairly new and I have A BUNCH of fragged files.

      Re: defragging

Fragmented files are just files that aren't written to the harddisk in a continous line. They are spread out so the needle on the harddrive must jump all over to get the whole file which slows down the performance. Just click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>Administration Tools>Disk Deframenter. Do that once a week or so and you'll be good.

Basically it rearranges files on your harddrive so it can find access and use them quicker.

I've found the best program for defragging is called PerfectDisk. It even has a function to defrag your pagefile.

If you use the defragger built into windows, you MUST run it at least 4-5 times before it does any good. Try it and see for yourself, each successive run defrags further.

PerfectDisk does it right the first time.

Hmmm I thought "defragging" was reviving someone when you were a medic .

                Re: defragging

From all the reviews I've ever read in the mags, the Windows defragger outperformed any 3rd party software. Things might have changed here very very recently, but the Windows defragger works.

I played around one day and ran Disk Defrag right after it had finished and it was done in about 15 seconds. It didn't even do anything. So I don't see why you need to run it 4-5 times in a row.

Windows Defragment works, but its far from the best software.

Actually if you look closely, youll notice that Disk Defragment isnt a windows appliction. It was developed by a third party many years ago, and then microsoft bought them.
