Get a 3800 X2 or AMD Opteron 170. AM2 might not come out for a long time yet and the processors I mentioned are extremely fast overclockers. If you can overclock then get either (that suits your budget).
3800 X2 easily clocks to 2400 on stock air, 512k cores. I can run 2600 with my zalman.
Opteron 170 usually clocks to at least 2500 on stock air, with 1mb cores. I'd get the Opteron 165 or 170 if you can find them. Both have the 1mb cores and are easy to overclock.
4400 in comparison is not a good price.Comment

well im good with my current set up, a cpu upgrade would be ok, clan make has almost same stuff as me but 512mb, and has an FX57 and gets 95-100fps.
im at 50-90fpsComment

You probably wont notice much of a performance increase by going dual core anyway -not with BF2. In fact you'd have to disable your second core just so you can play online with BF2... at least until that is fixed.
Get an Opteron 146 and clock it to as close as 3.0Ghz as you can. Prices start at £140 and a garuanteed cpu with good stepping can be picked up on ebay for less than £200.
Originally posting I forgot to read your spec... considering your setup and needs: get the Opteron 146. It's like the only wise choice out there!
Oh, and sell your 4 sticks of RAM and get 2x1gb of decent ram so you can run at 1T timing. That alone should gain you 10% performance.Comment

If all you are gettin is a processor then I would just grab an Opteron 170. He is serios, you will have to buy a new motherboard and ram. AM2 may not be released until late summer and even then it will be on it's first buggy chipset. ZZF has some great overclocking 0550 stepping 170's in:

I have a 4400+ that runs 2.8GHz with no problem. After I get my RAM back from RMA, I'm going to push for 2.9-3.0GHz. Overclocking any processor is the luck of the draw.Comment

yah i am serious... amd is preparing for a shift towards DDR-II memory, while still keeping the production of Socket 939 processors. the new Socket has 940 pins, but it isn't compatible with existing Socket 940 solutions and may come out during the 2nd quarter of '06. However, the name of the new socket won't be "Socket 940 Second Coming" or the long-time mentioned "Socket M2", which resided in every roadmap of AMD CPUs for next year. New name is Socket AM2, and we have learned that AMD will introduce not just new models, but will release Socket AM2 versions of existing CPUs as well. We have seen a roadmap which contains products that are part of the AM2 ramp-up. The new Socket AM2 is being occupied by three cores: Manilla, Orelans and Windsor. Alot of people have a problem with dual cores and BF2. It's a wide and unfixed bug. It's a combination of BF2 and Windoze code. There are fixes and downloading the Microsoft patch and AMD X2 XP Driver is supposed to fix it. Disabling a dual CPU affinity for BF2.exe once it is running is a workaround for those not wanting to download those drivers. Maybe you have both? The bug isn't fully understood or catalogued, but it is a real nuiscence.

Can you wait till a June rollout? Can you afford a £350 cpu, new mobo and hot DDR-II? Why wait? Get an Opteron 146 now or Opteron 165/170 (if you want dual core). Single core (high mhz Opteron 146) offers best performance for your money. When multi-core games start to hit PCs (1 year, 2 years?) then go AM2. Stick with your mobo, get a good Opteron 146, clock it to 2.8ghz (should be easy if you get a good stepping) and change your ram to 2 sticks.

You asked if 2 sticks is enough. AMD systems will run at a slower speed if you use 4 sticks of RAM. It's called 2T. Use 2 sticks and your memory pipeline runs at 1T. I'm glossing over facts but that's the deal. 1T vs 2T is anywhere from 0-20% performance difference. Get 2 sticks of whatever 1GB modules you can afford. If you know your shizzle then try and get modules that use BH5 or Samsung UCCC chips -these clock well. Samsung r teh ghetto option, BH5 will be expensive but the best.
mushkin eXtreme Performance 2GB I'd recommend these sticks over the Corsair you quoted.
