Your opinion 2GB or 3GB (in this case)

What would be better for me. I got 2x 1 GB TwinMOS DualRAM PC3200 and 2x 512MB TwinMOS DualRAM PC3200, both run the same speed the same timings. What is better, to include all of them in my 4 slots (can go up to 4 GB). Or just use the 2x 1GB. What are the advantages and disadvantages. I got quite some necessary background programs running, in case you want to know.

Having 2x1Gb alone will be faster. I don't see how you will use more than 2Gb.

2x1gb for bf2

but if you dont plan to upgrade your ram for a year or two 3gb might better

32-bit Operating systems can recognize but not address more than 2gb of memory. Simply put, 3 gb is a waste of a 1gb.

Actually 4GB is the 32-bit barrier, although i dont think XP was ever designed to utilize 4GB if present.

I still havnt seen anyone prove that 2x1GB is better than 4x512MB except in AMD boards where the DIMMS will downclock if all slots are filled.

I'd like to see some hard proof.

The new cores don't downclock the ram, but it defaults to a 2T command rate. Heres a new review about this subject:

On the RAM topic, I don't know if I need more RAM or I just have stuff running in the background that I don't need, I played BF2 with nothing running but the firewall etc, and BF2 is a lil choppy mainly at the start of the game takes about 10 mins for it to settle smooth, its like a lagish sort of thing, the voices stutter and freezes etc but it goes away after 5-10 mins.

Came off of BF2 and noticed the yellow caution sign in the taskbar, telling me about virtual memory running out of it and windows was going to expand, not seen that in a long time since my last PC, maybe I just need a reformat, I already defragged and cleaned my PC up.

the difference between 2x1gb and 4x512mb is at most 3% in fps

loading takes a little longer maybe 10-20 more seconds in bf2 but i wouldnt go to the trouble of taking my 2x512mb sticks just to buy 2x1gb for 3fps

how much space in your hardrive do you have left if you have less than say
4gb try deleting applications

and what is your pc specfications i had that laggy problem with my old pc which had 768mb ram

Im using 46.7 Gb HD space but I reduced that from like 70-80 GB and I have 182GB left.

Specs:

Intel Pentium 4 550J (3.4 GHz) Dual Core

1GB PC3200 RAM, it sucks because its 4x 256mb which is $h!tty because when I buy 2GB its gonna have to be 2X 1GB I buy.

250 GB HD

Nvidia Geforce 6600 256MB.

Your page file should be 2-2.5 times the size of your physical RAM.

And the Min/Max settings for it should be the SAME to avoid fragmentation of the page file.

They just did a test the other day...how about that?

They conclude that 1gig is more than enough for most if not all programs...but certain games(BF2 included), definately benefit greatly from having 2gigs.

Also, they conclude that 2x1024 is better than 4x512, because the memory controller does less work with only 2 modules.

Therefore not only is 2gigs great for GAMES...2x1024 is the prefered and best method.

That is incorrect, max settings should be 1.5 times the size of your physical ram.

man thats bad 4x256mb if you want to stop the stutterting your probebly going to have to go to 2gb

but if you turn a few things off in bf2 it helps save ram
turn "english vo only" on
make sure you have all uneeded background applications closed

anyone know how to check the size of your pagefile?
