First I should mention that I have Windows XP x64.
Lately, as in the last 2-3 weeks my computer has been using too much time to do tasks. Simple things like alt-tabbing out of a game, browsing a folder with MANY images/songs/movies and stuff like that made the harddrive work a lot, and it took several seconds instead of being instant, like it should.
So, after reading some tweakguides, I thought of reducing the pagefile, or atleast check the settings (hadn't done that after formatting about a month ago) for virtual memory.
The memory management showed that the pagefile was set to 2045 min. and 4100 max. Now, the guides state that you should turn OFF the pagefile first, then defrag - and then make a new pagefile. So, I defragged, turn off the pagefile, and rebooted - with the intent of setting a new pagefile of about 1GB.
However, as it rebooted I noticed that Windows launched faster than usual. Especially the Welcome screen, where I choose User account, popped up instantly. Everything else in Windows was also VERY smooth, and my MP3 folder (containing 13000 songs in one folder) loaded in about 1.5 second! I've never seen my computer working this fast!
It also had a large impact on BF2/SF. The gameplay was much more fluid, FPS was higher and more stable - and there was absolutely no stuttering of any kind. I could even increase my resolution and put all details to High without taking much of a performance hit! It's still not as fast as pre-1.12 though..
So, needless to say, I didn't set a new pagefile - and I'm extremely happy with the performance. I can't believe I never tried this before! You see everywhere people are warning others not to turn off the pagefile, as Windows wont work correctly without a pagefile. Well, until I see any proof of that, I'm carrying on without any pagefile. The only oddity I've experienced so far is Photoshop that warns me about not having a pagefile - but the program works as it should - only much faster than before
I'm a webdesigner and do a lot of coding and graphical work, which often uses lots of memory. No problems at all though, I haven't seen Photoshop using more than a coule of hundred megs at max!
In closing, I'd like to say that you should definitely give this a go if you feel the need for better performance. The worst thing that can happen is that your PC wont boot, but that is fixed simply by booting in Safe Mode and setting a pagefile from there :)
It might not give you a boost, but it's definitely worth a shot!
Note: Do not attempt this if you're running less than 2GB of RAM.
