My 5900XT: To hell and back

Me and a freind have GeForce FX 5900XT's. Mine is made by PNY his is BFG. He flashed his bios with a 5950 ultra's bios that he tweaked a bit to Overclock his card to 510Mhz GPU and 1010MHz Ram :|: .

Now i tried to do the same (ive done it before on other nvidia cards) but when i tried using a PNY 5950u Bios on my PNY 5900XT it didnt work. My screen got scrambled.

I ended up going through 10 5950 bioses before i gave up. And some how in the confusion i lost the origional PNY 5900xt bios:cry: . So i spend 6 hours tweeking other bioses from other 5900XT manufacturers.

I finally found this site that had Bioses from a company named Point of View (never heard of them) But it worked perftect!

Not only is my card working great again, but its now overclocked to 490Mhz GPU and 800MHz Ram! I can play BF2 at almost all High settings (except Texture Filter/4x AA/ and Dynamic Shadowing). My old Bios setup could only play it at all medium settings.

I think I could push the game to run at all High settings if i Overclocked my CPU a bit. Its a Athlon Barton 2800 that i overclocked already to 2.2GHz.

Do you guys think its wise to OC my processor any further? Or push the graphics card harder?

PNY is a relatively cheap brand I believe.
Your card runs well wow. My 9800 pro cant even do 2x AA. I dont know about oc sry.

I think at this point you are being held back by your card, not cpu.BF2 is relatively easy on the cpu, and 2.2ghz should be more than enough.

Oh well, at least i made some improvement. Ive become more darring with my PC because in 3 weeks im gonna be building my new PC:

AMD 64 (San Diego) 4000
MSI K8N SLI-F Mobo
Nvidia 7800GTX (BFG OC'ed)
10K RPM 75GB SATA Hard Drive
OCZ Powerstream 550w PSU
Creative SoundBlaster Auduigy Gamer ZS 2 Platinum
and 2 GB of PNY PC3200

Don't go msi, I have that board and I hate it. Go with either asus or dfi for a socket 939 board.

how do you overclock it in BIOS?

well i didnt go this way, because i tried to upgrade to a 5950 but here is what you can do to overclock your bios:

(im not 100% on this, try at your own risk)

Go and download this program (WFFlash.exe) http://www.cluboverclocker.com/guide...A380U_BIOS.zip

That will have 4 Files....Delete the .txt file and .rom files so you dont get yourself confused.

make a bootable floppy disk by insterting one right clicking then format, and then check the box "make MS-DOS Bootable".

After that is done copy wfflash.exe and dos4gw.exe to the floppy.

restart and boot with floppy in. Now this is the part im not sure about because i had other bioses to fool around with, i didnt do this with the stock one. *tpye wfflash.exe -s then it should make a backup file called oldbios.rom

go back to windows and download this software: http://download.softpedia.com/softwa...iTor.v2.6a.zip

Unzip it and go into the utility, Click FILE then OPEN BIOS. select the oldbios.rom (backup) from the floppy and then you can edit the 3D, Throttle and 2D settings (core Speed & Ram Speed). I cannot tell you how fast to go, best way to go is to increase in 10 mhz increments.

Save the bios as a different name

Then restart and boot from floppy.

Then type without quotes "wfflash.exe -s" then after a pause and the prompt comes back type "wfflash.exe nm Biosname.rom" (biosname is what u named it) if everything works right then u should get Programm ok (0) messege.

Go into windows. re-install drivers and test it out. If you get artifacts or poor performance then just reverse the prossess by rebooting and then booting from floppy and typing "wfflash.exe nm oldbios.rom"


LIKE I SAID DO THIS AT YOUR RISK AND DONT MESS WITH VOLTAGE SETTINGS. AND IF YOU MESS IT UP ITS ALMOST IRREVERSABLE IF U DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING

well i dont know yet. I havent played a complete round on BF2 yet. right now the temperature is chillin at 42*C which is cooler than my CPU so im not ver worried. Even after the game it was only 52*C

I have my computer next to a window that has a huge draft and its 14*F outside he he he
