    Help....

Hey there, just was curious if anyone could help me out in upgrading my processor. My system is as follows, and yes, haha i do play BF2 on this-

    AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67Ghz
    768MB PC2100 SD
    GForce 5200FX Asylum 128Mb, 64MB interface
    300Watt Power Supply(i think?)

eMachines model W2040 all original, beside the RAM and Video card upgrade a few years ago. Tried looking what exact motherboard i had in BIOS but no luck...i just want to know what kind of Nvidia card i can run(looking to spend 150$ tops on a new vid card), and i could drop about 150$ on a new processor as well, i would like to run something up to 2.4Ghz, is it possible with my specs? Do i have a decent power supply and everything to run a 2.4 Ghz processor, and a decent Nvidia card?

OK, you will have to find out if you have a PCI, AGP or Pci-e slot for your Video card. Just look on the box that the card cam with, or get a program called Everest and it will tell you. If you have AGP thats ok, you can still get good cards, but you want Pci-e. If you have PCI, then you are very limited on what you can get. You can easily upgrade your CPU, you could get some very good ones as you have a 939 socket.

      Re: Help....

If you want an AMD athalon youre going to need a little more than $150 for a 2.4GHz, unless you OC maybe a 3200+.

I need to know what kind of socket you have on your motherboard, and what interface your video card uses(PCIe, AGP, PCI,...)

        Re: Help....

Yea you could get the AMD 3000+ XP, that runs at about 2Ghz, then you could OC that and get 2.4.

Wow guys thanks for the speedy help!!!!

          My Graphics slot is AGP....

As for the socket i dunno, but 939 was mentioned above? Is that it?

That is some exciting news, dont tease keep going! lol...

I just would have liked to achieve my first 20,000 points looking good, instead of bare bones, and almost in slow motion sometimes, then other times it runs smooth as silk(yeah of course on all low)

Also i just want BF2 to look nice, not sexy, just nice, and i want to run it well.

            Re: Help....

Well, if you have an athlon xp, then it should be a socket a cpu. Please download cpu-z and show us a screenshot of the first page, then we can tell you for sure.

                        Negative.

He said it's an eMachines...which has a locked BIOS. There will be no upgrading beyond ram and a video card.

It is a socket A for reference. The best CPU his outdated and unupdatable BIOS will allow is the xp2400 or 2500+, I forget which. And the price each of those sell for is at least half of a brand new AMD64!

I would get nothing better than an nVidia 6600gt 128mb or ATI equivalent.

I've had several eMachines, they worked fine and did what I needed, but you cannot upgrade them beyond ram and video cards...without wasting your money.
                        .
                        .
                        .
Oh yea, if that is your stock power supply they gave you, it is at most a 250watt Bestec with 13amps on the 12v rail...another reason why you cannot go beyond the card I suggested without pumping more cash into the system.

The card is your last dollar to spend on this comp...don't even bother buying more pc2100 ram either.

ouch that hurts to hear :hmm:

so the 6600gt would improve my performance lag, or is that more of a processor issue?

Yes a 6600GT will help alot with the graphice, as BF2 does rely heavily on the GPU. I would suggest OC'ing your CPU, that was you can get a bit more milage out of it, and see a bit more of the eye candy, but the RAM will let you down.
