Does a person "NEED" and SLI setup...

    Ok.. Heres the dilly...

    Current specs posted below...

I am borderline on buying an addition 7800GT and run SLI....

I would have to upgrade my PSU to a SLI rated unit (not a big deal - Antec Tru-Power 2.0 $90)...

Basically I am looking at $410 roughly...

But does a guy really need an SLI setup....
maybe the 6600s or 6800s but does he need the 7800 SLI setup..

I run BF2 ALL HIGH with 2x AA... not a sinlge issue...

This is a question of NEED and WANT...

    What are your thoughts...

Well, I can't speak for anyone else but I got it because I had the money and wanted to. Sure, I don't need it, but it's nice to have.

You SHOULD. Though your BF2 performance will be perfect at max 4x AA (which is not much different from your current settings) all other games will do much better. Your performance in all games will get much better, and it will last you a long time, at least until new games get developed for vista.

            Here are my thoughts...

            A. Screw it, Get the SLI Setup...It'll be great...

            B. Woah... Sell the 7800Gt and get a 7800GTX 512mb... and SLI later....

            C. Just wait and see what Nvidias next Cards are... ( G71 ? )

Save your money, get a 7900GTX, and dont waste your money on sales gimmicks like SLI.

I've seen too many benchmarks in high end machines that show the performance cut-offs on SLI, its nothing spectacular.

If you plan to play in ANY resolution below 1600x1200, then you will have completely wasted your money on SLI.

It is ONLY for 1600x1200 and greater resolutions.

Reviews speak for themselves. Using reses below 16x12 results in SLI gains of 10-25% only. When you bump up the res, the performance increase becomes much greater.

I'll say it again, SLI/Crossfire has one single use: 1600x1200 and greater resolutions. Anything less is a waste of money and the extra card being only 1/4 used.

Lastly, you realize 3-6 months after you buy that 2nd card, there will be a single card that exceeds both of them combined...for less money than you spent on one of them.
                .
                .
                .
p.s. only a fool would SLI 6600's...even GT's. A single 6800gt often outperforms 2 6600gt's in SLI. SLI is meant for the top rung of cards, 68's, 78's.

Wait for the 7900's to come out, if you dont get one of them, they will push down the prices of the 7800's.. thus.. saving you money to put towards that HUGE 30" monitor from Dell.
