ok so long story short, i can get a pair of just about any video card i want through a friend's work. so im wondering what the best brand of vid card is for running it in SLI. i was lookin at a pair of 7800 GTXs. but with the new ATI 1900 line out, im not quite sure how much better (if any) these are. and also does anyone know if Nvidia is planing a new card soon? shoudl i wait a month or osmething?

7900 series should be out within the next month or two. If you have the money to burn get those, if not just pick up a pair of 7800GTX 512s. -

I don't think there are any good crossfire boards out right now. If I were even to consider crossfire I'd wait for the ATi Crossfire Xpress 3200 (RD580) Chipset boards to hit the market in February.
With that being said If you want to buy now go with SLI all the way.Comment

X1900 series don't do SLI , they have crossfire .
Also, at this moment crossfire motherboards are difficult to find, and there are many many many reports of people having problems with crossfire , even pro reviewsites sometimes just can't make the crossfire work .
If you want dual cards, better take Nvidia cards , but at this moment, better wait a bit, normaly the 7900 (G71) should come out in marchComment

I'd go for two 7800GTX 512MB cards, that's the best you can get right now for SLI.
It's not much point in waiting really; every time you want to buy some hardware there are always something better coming out in a few months. Unless you want the best of the best, and have money to burn

also: pertaining to SLi. My friend is building a computer soon, and he thinks he is all that, but actually doesnt know crap. Anyways, hes talking to me about my computer, (btw he is getting a x800xl gfx card) and he asks what video card I have. I told him I have two 6800gt's in SLi (I said gt's instead of GS's because they perform the same and I knew that he wouldnt have a clue in the world what a GS was, so I thought I would spare him the confusion). He looked at me for a sec, and said "why do you have two cards?"
I said "havent u heard of SLi, I have them in SLi, dual performance"
He says "why would you want SLi though?"
I told him for double the perforamcen on games, and I could see his head spinning as though it was about to explode, he tried talking and he just stuttered. IMO it was the funniest 'computer' related experience with my friends other than my other friend frying his mobo by putting a 24 pin connecter in a 20 pin mobo
