    3DMark05 score versus Realworld gameplay?

    Hi

    Does anyone else find their scores in 3DMark05 almost irrelevant to their realworld FPS in BF2?

    Old rig: 3DMark05 score ~ 5800
    New rig: 3DMark05 score ~ 6800

    Not a huge percentage increase there then...

    On my old rig, I played with all video settings at low, and 800x600, and frame rates often dropped to 10-15, never rose above 25-30.

    On new rig, resolution is 1280x1024, ALL video settings are maxed out including 4xAA, and framerates average 40-90 - very playable indeed... :)

    There just doesn't seem to be any correlation between the huge improvement in gameplay, and the quite small improvement in benchmark score... which makes me wonder how useful these benchmarks really are?

    Or is there another benchmarking tool out there which is more useful for gaming systems than Futuremark's seems to be?

    Cheers

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Old rig:
    Athlon XP 2600+ @2.1
    0.75GB SDRAM
    X800 XT PE
    New Rig:
    Athlon 64 3700+ @ 2.2
    2GB PC3200
    7800GT
    Well first off let me just say that the cause of all this was the ram in your original system. 3d mark 05 is designed to test graphics capabilities, and therefor puts the most stress on the gfx card, and not so much on the rest of the system. Battlefield is very hard on ram, and from the looks of it you didnt have much on the old system, and it wasnt all that great.
    Hope that helps, oh and btw you have the same system as me, lol.
      YES, and in every other game as well.
      3DMark05 - BS. 3DMark06 - More realistic, but too demanding to be helpful.
      They're only good for eyecandy.
        There must have been something wrong with your last PC. I got 2000 on 3dmark05 and got 40-50fps on medium settings with a 9800pro. An x800xtpe should have been able able to play with most settings on high, though the ram in your old system wont have helped.
            Open the console with the button above tab, and type "renderer.Drawfps 1" without the quotation marks. The first red number on the top left of the screen is the fps.
              I second the idea that something was wrong in the first one. You should have been able to play on much higher settings that that.
                  Even though there are CPU tests, 3dMark is a GPU tester...which explains the slight difference in score...because the 78gt is only that much better than the very nice card you already had. Roughly 15-20% better.
                  There is nothing wrong with the old setup...his problems I would blame on the fact that he had only 768mb of ram versus 2048 now.
                  If he had that old system with 2048, I bet he could have maxed the game up to at least 1024x768 with 2x or 4x AA.
