Seperate Power Supply?

Hi, I've used the search feature and didn't find any result so...

I'm in an odd position where I have a pre-built PC. I have switched out the old graphics card to an nVidia 6600GT (as it was what I could afford). I'm the only one I've heard of getting bad frames on low settings, and I've been told it was because my power supply was not strong enough. (See signature)

I have a second power supply (450w) and would like to use it, but my PC's current power supply seems to be permanently attached to the hard-drive. I was wondering, if anyone knew, if I could attach my 450w PSU to my 6600GT without it shorting? (I'm led to believe that the mobo supplies power to the gfx card already?)

Or possibly for me to somehow just use the weaker PSU for the mobo, hard drive, and video card; and try to use the 450w one for the other things? (such as the cd drives, but they seem out of reach, so attaching a power dongle from the 450w PSU to the 6600GT is the easiest thing at the moment). I'm sorry if my instructions aren't clear or if I've posted this in the wrong forum. Any help would be appreciated.

(I've been able to get the 450w PSU to start up by itself by attaching the PSU-on to a ground.
Also: Old PSU doesn't have a on-off switch, while new (450w) does.

Are you sure it's permanently attached to the HD, I've never heard of that before.

Well, i've tried getting the power dongle out several times. is there some sort of button I'm supposed to press...? Isn't it just "pull-out" ? just like the video card is?

Forgive me, I'm a newbie with the hardware =/

hmm... I'll have to try again. I was afraid I might break something by pulling too hard, as It didn't even budge.

Also, I've just noticed that this prebuilt PC of mine has some sort of cage around the disc-drives >.< looks like I'll have a bit of trouble getting the new power connectors in there. =/

That is a normal connector, so unless someone glued it in it should pop out with some force. You can't just hook up a power supply since it needs to be attached to the motherobard to actually work. You can mod two or more PSU's together to work off of the same motherboard, but it involves a little work as well as cutting and splicing wires. You are better off replacing it.

Well, I've got the PSU to be able to run on it's own by connecting the PSU-on pin with one of the grounds. I can tell the PSU is running cause the fan will turn on, which is a sign that it's on, right?

Also, would it be safe to attach one of the second PSU's molex connectors to my 6600GT? or will that fry it?

It's not a good idea to go messing around with stuf like that unless you have a clue as to what you are doing. You will end up damaging something if you go messing around in there all willy-nilly.

I'm using 2 PSUs by just jumping 2 wires on the 20 wire main connector. Both PSUs aren't required to be connected to the mobo for it to work.

Yes, i do agree that it's not a good idea, thus I'm asking. I've heard some cases of it working, so... yeah.. That's why I'm asking?

rymaples, what do you mean by "Both PSUs are requred to be connected" ? I have also jumped two wires on the main 20 pin connector.

Connected.. to what...? etc

I've tried to unplug the HDD again between replies, I've exerted enough pulling force to both break the skin on my fingers and pull the entire tower if nothing was holding it down. am I supposed to be using pliers or am I doing something wrong?


(Yes, the PC was off. I'm not that dumb to leave it on while trying to remove it)

Try some needle nosed plyers and wiggle it loose.

have you tried pushing the sides of it inwards, than pulling out?
from what i see in the pic, it seems that the connector is in segments. maybe you gotta take out the piece on the front before you pull it out? just tryin to help idk...

DakrkIllusion - No, the connector is pretty much one peice. i've tried squeezing it, sliding it, etc, but it seems to be like a normal piece except curved at 90 degrees. There's another connector just like it at the end of the cable and that just slides out. (It might be at the bottom of one of the pictures, but yeah. it slides out with a bit of force)

Wreck - I'll try doing that. But all the other connectors slide out, compared to this one, which doesn't seem to budge =/

--And if i did get the connector dislodged from the Harddrive, i'm going to have some trouble getting it out of the disc drives and then plugging new ones in. maybe the pliers will help there as well
