Do X800 cards not like AF for BF2?

I put my AF to 16x (the only setting i changed) and now when i get in helos (not jets) my FPS go from 45-55 to 12, and it sits there for about 20 seconds then goes back to 45-55. Only in helo's does this happen.

I put the AF down to 8, and it still does the same thing. Except during normal play i get 65-75 FPS now instead of 45-55.

I guess i should just turn it all the way off, but then the game gets kind of ugly.

I thought for sure my X800 Pro could handle more than this, but i guess i was wrong.

    Im buying Nvidia next time.

As a person that has one, I think that you are expecting too much from what is now a pretty average card.

Not sure about your argument with Nvidia either. With your expectation, I'm sure that if you had a 6600/6800gt you'd be saying you would buy ati next.

From what ive experienced, a 6800GT usually puts down an X800pro pretty bad.

Also, the 7800 series is a massive step ahead of the X1800 crap.

I'm not a "fanboy" at all. I've owned several of both companies, and Nvidia has just worked better for me in the past.

My X800 pro tends to enjoy overheating too.

Also, it shouldnt be so "average" yet.

Its only a yearish old and there are only like 4-5 cards out from ATI that top it, most of which are variants off the same chipset.

has ATI finally created a way to "span" desktops with dual monitors? last ATI card i owned (about a year ago), wouldn't let me stretch the windows toolbar across both screens like any normal Nvidia card would...

My X850's handle this game fine. Sounds like you have some other issue so don't be so quick to blame the ATI card. How much ram do you have??

Sorry mate, we all have different views but each time I play bf2 it screams 'average' to me.

That sounds like a game issue. AF is on regardless of the vehicle you're in. If your problem was related to AF it would occur the entire time you were playing.

What it sounds like you're describing is the attack helo lag in the SF expansion. There are some threads with quite a few people posting problems with lag in the helos.

For the record, teh 6800GT IS better than the X800Pro, similar clock speeds, but it has 16 pipes, the X800XL is the equivelent of the 6800GT on ATI's side, but now, both have been superceded by the 6800GS, which is better, and cheaper.:)

I know, it should be happening all the time.

Then i wondered if it did it only because of the quicker rendering the GPU must do when moving fast. But it doesnt happen in jets, which if it happens ANYwhere it should be in jets.

I dont know WTF it is with choppers.

When i ran 4x AA and 0 AF it ran fine and never did this, but i got tiny bits of stuttering with artillery right on my head.

Now i get no stuttering, just 11fps while in the chopper

my uber techy friend (complete with amd 4800 x2 super computer) says that anti tropical filtering (im not bothering to spell it right) takes up a hell of a lot more resources than anti aliasing, while the effects are less noticeable in most peoples opinions.

try 4x or something less than 8x. simply set anti tropics to 0 to see if its your problem.

i thought Anti Aliasing was more of a resource hog than Anisotropic Filtering.

I think ill turn it off and see if that fixed the problem. But that will have to be done on saturday because i have a bunch of contracts to finish up this week. Blah.
